Description
Bird Stop by Bird-X is a food-grade taste aversion liquid bird repellent that tastes bad to birds and irritates birds' sensory systems (similar to our sense of smell). Applying the bird repellent spray directly to surfaces will create a safe and effective deterrent to pest birds. The active ingredient (methyl anthranilate) has a taste and smell that birds avoid. Liquid can be painted or sprayed onto surfaces such as grass, turf, crops and structures. Often, a single application brings permanent success after 2 to 3 applications, even stubborn birds learn not to return. Single gallon treats up to 1 acre. Repel pest birds such as geese, ducks, seagulls and other waterbirds, as well as pigeons, sparrows, starlings, barn swallows, etc.

Does not deter robins
I have a covered pergola where persistent robins continue to build nests making a nasty mess on the area rub below. I purchased this expensive product and followed the instructions to the letter. After three applications the birds keep coming back. The odour is enough to deter humans, but not these pesky robins. It would have been nice to purchase a smaller, less expensive container to try. I have now spent in excess of $150 for a product that does not keep birds away, as advertised!

This seems to work
This appears to have deterred our local woodpecker from attempting to drill holes in our synthetic stucco. Time will tell how effective it is in the long run, but for now it seems to be working. Although the instructions said to mix 1:1 with water for construction or residential structures, I mixed about 6:1 water to deterrent which seemed to work well in the garden sprayer and still smelled very strong. It smells like grapes.

They went away and I got my Mental Health Back
Before I retired I had the exterior of my house redone. I had been in my home for 30 years. It was done with EIFS (Exterior Insulation and Finishing System) and decorative build outs. I love the look of stucco! What I came to know is that downy woodpeckers also love EIFS! Long story short, downy woodpeckers are not looking for bugs on my house they are looking (in my case to create roosting nests for the winter). I live in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada. They come periodically and I cannot predict when they will come. Okay so I have tried everything, talking to wildlife experts, provincial environmental experts, exterminators, a Regina artist made me a paper machie "Merlin", dangly things from my house, etc. I know more from my research than I want! So this year, July 2020, here we go again! For 3 days I spooked the woodpecker off my house and later found he was pecking on the garage. I went online and found Bird Stop and placed an order. On July 28th I mixed the product as instructed (1 part to 1 part water) in a lawn and garden sprayer. I tested the mix on a small area. When mixed it sprays on white but when it dries it is clear. I sprayed the top 3 feet of my house and garage. I did need to clean the sprayer out once as it clogged up with the quality of the sprayer. I went with a bottle sprayer on the build outs as using any sprayer splashes on the windows. I would suggest using a paint brush to apply the product to the build outs or anywhere near a window.
So the color of my stucco is Renaissance clay and I can see where I sprayed. Easy fix just spray the rest of the house and really no one would notice but me. So has it worked? I am all in! I sprayed my house on July 28. The next day the woodpecker came back on the garage with very small holes (did not like the smell). I closed them up again with stucco and and gave the area a spray of Bird Stop. The woodpecker came back to the same spot 8 days later (small holes) (persistent!!) (does not like the smell and left). Today is August 21 and NO MORE WOODPECKER. The product is very fragrant. I do not find the smell toxic or offensive however you will smell what the woodpecker smells. I had too keep my windows closed for couple of weeks and when I go in the garage I can smell the product. I am not sure how long the product will last especially in Winter but I did order another gallon! I am hoping this positive result lasts!
