Basic Econo Mitre Kit; accessories not included.
No one wants a mitre box kit, but people do want a few mitre joints. It's a basic disposable econo old fashioned mitre box kit. Accessories not included. Good for a few odd jobs. What do some people expect? You don't get what you don't pay for. At least you're not paying over 62% more at Rona in store to get the exact same kit with the Fuller name on it instead of their private label, Project Source. Although not carried by Rona, a manual Swedish made good Nobex Professional Mitre Box costs $369.00. Although not carried by Rona, just a simple aluminum made in U.S.A. thin-slot mitre box by itself costs $29.00; the requisite thin blade saw is extra, and if not temporarily clamping the mitre box in place to keep it in place, you have to drill and recess your own screw or stove bolt mounting holes. The reason for the five stars is it is what it is and does what it does as best as can be expected for at the price point it is at. Not all that many years ago such sort of simple mitre boxes were made out of hardwood. It's a toss up which wear out faster. To those who complain that the saw binds in the mitre box. It's called lubrication; dry lubrication. Lubricant in the guide slots makes a backsaw glide in a mitre box. In yesteryear wax was used, spray shuffleboard wax. Nowadays spray on polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), for example B'LASTER Advanced Dry Lube with Teflon (PTFE) or Super Lube Dri-Film Lubricant with Syncolon (PTFE), works very well. Boeshield T-9 works well too [ Boeshield T-9 makes for a great shuffleboard wax too... ;-) ]. Frequently lubricating the guide slots in the mitre box will allow the plastic box and econo backsaw to wear out together. To those who complain that the mitre box moves around in use and is thereby hard to use, that's why there's a couple of screw holes with bosses moulded in the base of the mitre box to affix the mitre box in place with flathead screws or stove bolts. I happened to have a blister pack of 1" long #4 flathead woodscrews at hand, and even two of those little screws hold the mitre box in place for me on a piece of sacrificial old OSB board. I could have clamped the mitre box in my trusty old Workmate but I didn't feel like getting it out just to hold the mitre box when I could readily screw it down with no qualms about making a couple of little screw hole wounds in an old piece of OSB board. The only thing I happen to be miffed about in this case is that I bought this mitre box kit not even four full days ago on "promotion" while at the local Rona store because they wouldn't do on a length of shoe mould a few simple 45° cuts with their cut shop's DeWALT saw that lo and behold actually is a DeWALT model that is capable of doing a simple 45° cut, and now I find the mitre box kit I just bought is 20% less online. Am I going to get a price adjustment? Yes, the next time I happen to be in the area or go directly to that Rona store to pick up an online order I will be getting a price adjustment one way or another.
