Exterior paint stain is a versatile coating that is stronger than its cousin, interior stain. This product has additives that allow its coat to resist weathering and wear caused by rain, snow, wind, and sun. There are two main applications for exterior stain: flat or vertical. If you’re colouring a surface that’s going to get foot traffic, such as a deck, you need deck stain. Other types of paint stain, often called siding stain or fence stain, do well on vertical surfaces, but they can’t withstand foot traffic.

Exterior stain comes in two different formulations. Water-based stain, also known as latex-based, creates a barrier on top of the wood. This prevents moisture from getting in. The best practice when recoating a surface that’s treated with water-based paint stain is to pressure wash it thoroughly so that the old top layer gets stripped off. Oil-based stains penetrate the wood, leaving behind a rich colour. Apply oil stain without the need to strip off old layers, provided that the previous layers were also oil-based.

When putting on stain, be sure to have the right tools for the job. Stock up on suitable brushes, both for initial cleaning of the deck and for application. Rollers made from appropriate materials — natural fibers for oil stain or synthetic for water-based — are also vital.
