How to use it properly.
I purchased this and tested it on some pine. I had some blotchy results initially when I tried to stain soon after I wiped off the excess. Best to let it dry a good hour or so then apply the stain and it will be perfect. You need to let the conditioner fully dry otherwise it hasn't created the proper seal below the surface.

A must have for any woodworker
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] For anyone who has ever done any kind of woodworking to were they had to strip the wood down to bare, this is a must have for you. It keeps you from getting a blotchy finish you sometimes get when bare wood soaks up polyurethane , varnish or shellac differently on one side of a board than another. The pre-stain creates a barrier to allow even coloration of your stain and even penetration of your finish material.

Not my favorite
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I have been refinishing furniture for a few years now and constantly go through wood conditioner. I would say that I have more than enough experience working with these products and know what brands work well. I had not tried the Minwax wood conditioner until I received this product and was not very impressed. After using this product I felt that it did not prepare the wood for staining very well. I had to use a few coats for it to be ready and I was not happy with the results. In the future, I would look for different brands of wood conditioner.

Absolute MUST with Pine
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I didn't know about this stuff until a co-worker told me about it and now I'm hooked. I tried to stain pine before and it came out so bad, I ended up painting it. Now I have the cure. Pine will never take stain perfectly, but this is about as close as you can get to perfect. I stained two shelves and they matched up really well with the original shelves. (The pics don't do is justice.) No unevenness or patchiness in the boards. Excellent product!

Works as advertised
Used to keep stain absorbing evenly. Used on oak bare wood to stain golden oak - had tried stain on a scrap piece of wood showing uneven stain absorption. Worked as advertised to even final look. Oil base so not easy to clean up in cold weather.

Perfect predating yreatment
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This product does a wonderful job of preparing the wood to accept a coat of stain. I’ve used it many times and always get a very even coat of Stan after applying this product.
This only adds 10 minutes to the staining process. Apply this, wait 10 minutes and wipe off, then apply stain.
Be sure to apply stain within 2 hours of applying this per instructions. I’ve never waited that long as I precise and them stain right away instead of working with lots of wood at once.

I'm Going To Try This Again
The first coat of stain on my pine wood project turned out blotchy after using the conditioner. I started staining after 15 minutes had passed and wiping off excess. Perhaps the product needs more drying time than 15 minutes? If it's better to wait an additional 15 min-1/2 hour, shouldn't the directions state, "2. Allow to penetrate for 5 to 15 minutes, then remove any excess with clean dry cloth. Wait 1/2 hour before applying stain. 3. Apply stain within 2 hours of application..." The window to stain is less but wouldn't the results be worth it?

Must have
I have been using this product for years, and it really does the job I work with pine a lot, because of the grain and the knots. This is essential to prepare the wood. Easy to use, and does a great job.

I use this prior to staining, it balances the wood and stain is more even across the surface of the project, shelf life about 1 year after opening.

To be fair...
... I need to run some more tests.
I have tried this on Douglas Fir (common boards and 1/2" sanded ply) and Lowes' 3/4" maple ply.
I did run a comparison test on the 3/4" maple ply and noticed little difference putting Minwax Red Mahogany Wood Finish on the treated vs. non-treated pieces.
I have some hardwood trinket boxes I plan to try it on (using a different stain) and will also try a comparison on the softwood fir.
Stay tuned! I expect to update this review in a couple months.

goes on easily, makes the wood accept the stain equally through out the panels and eliminates a blotchy finish as was the norm for plywood. It made my project look like a real pro did the work.

Pre stain for oil based products
This works similar to the Pre Stain water based version. Not much of a clean up since most times you just dispose of the applicator and rags for wiping off the product. Just know when you start with oil finish with oil.

causes Ployshade to run
used on my project...applied conditioner and removed excess and applied Polyshade within two hours.... terrible results, I thought it was the stain and gave that product a terrible review (see OCG review) I applied stain to the back side of two drawer fonts (with out using the wood conditioner) and the stain worked fine. So this conditioner is the problem. I saw where a review waited two days before applying stain. That is not what the manufacturer recommends. Looks like I'll be tearing my project apart and starting over. Thanks Minwax...another stellar product. Next time I'll choose Cabot or some other manufacturer

A Pine Preparation Must
We sanded our floors to reveal raw pine. Then we used Minwax Wood Stain Pre-Conditioner. We then did 3 coats of Jacobean to get a dark rich, color which was followed by a coat of Minwax Semi-Gloss Oil-Based polyurethane. It took about 24 hours for each coat to dry. We had never done this before. We watched some YouTube videos for appropriate techniques, and it went really smoothly. I wouldn't trade our floors for any laminate on the market!

Great product
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Used as directed and yielded great results! Tried a piece without it and could really see the difference in how the wood soaked up the stain. Much more even coat with the conditioner. I wish I would have tried it sooner.

Scotts Turf Builder Winter guard
Works great. I routinely use it on new hard and soft wood. They have oil based and water based, so make sure that if you're applying an oil based stain you use the oil-based pre-finish. Same with water-based. Highly recommend if you're buying "off-the-rack" softwood from "big-box" home improvement stores.

Wonderful product, but..
I used this product prior to applying Special Oak and Weathered Oak over a test piece of pine- the results were so even and beautiful! On the barn door I applied the conditioner and it looked as if the product was blotchy.. I’m thinking the wood may have been a little too wet still so I didn’t proceed with the staining. I’m going to let the pine dry for a couple more weeks- then should I sand off the conditioner and start from ground zero? Or should I just apply another coat of conditioner and go from there? Thanks Minwax! :)

Prestain
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I bought this product to use on a cabinet I was making out of craft wood. The product did exactly what I expected. When I started staining the cabinet I could see the stain went on more evenly. The result is what you see in the picture.

Noticeably effective for large surfaces
This review is for Minwax Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner (as purchased from a big-box retailer). I used it in fabricating a large woodworking project from furniture-grade birch veneer plywood. The scale of the project justified testing on scrap pieces beforehand the results of applying the stain (a medium-brown "pecan" color oil-based stain) both with and without using the pre-stain conditioner. At the scale of the scrap pieces (one foot square), the conditioner's effect of making the final stain more uniform in value was seemingly noticeable, but not what I would call "dramatic." However, when I used the conditioner on the final parts in the project (stained before assembly), the effect was indeed dramatic, not only across single large surfaces (some as large as 15 square feet), but from part to part, some stained several days apart. All the surfaces were consistently uniform in effect, with no dull or blotchy areas or out-of-control grain. Comparing the results to other large projects I have made without using the pre-stain conditioner, I could easily see that using the conditioner made a significant improvement in the quality of the finish. The only slightly negative aspect of using the conditioner is that the final color is, overall, very slightly lighter, on average, than unconditioned projects (made from the similar wood), but that's something that will be manageably predictable in future projects. (I can not comment, as others have, on the importance of following Minwax's instructions for timing the application process, or the consequences of ignoring them, because I followed them carefully; I wiped off excess conditioner after 10 minutes, and applied the final stain one hour later.) Bottom line: The value of using the pre-stain conditioner on relatively small surfaces may not be obvious, but I am very pleased with the results on large surfaces.

Must have for wood pieces
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] My husband and I work with wood a lot, from restoring wood furniture to creating beautiful wood crafts. We do stain our pieces a lot and did feel like we needed to do a little extra. This pre-stain is absolutely amazing! We sometimes sand our pieces, so we used this without sanding and with sanding. We followed the instructions carefully, blew off the excess and started to mix the conditioner. We brushed in the conditioner and waited about 15 minutes and then started to stain the wood. The pre-stain conditioner really transformed our pieces and made them look very smooth and brought out the natural wood effect. The pieces turned out beautiful. There were no streaks and each piece turned out so even and amazing. Love this stuff. Highly recommend.

Frustrated and disapppointed
I have completed numerous staining/painting projects in the past, never using pre-stain conditioner with very good results. Bought some unfinished parawood furniture and decided to use this conditioner for the perfect finish. Followed instructions on the back label and final result showed heavy blotches and dark spots. Is there a way to correct the finish to the even uniform look I expected? How?

Better than I thought.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] We recently purchased a house in October and ripped up all of the rugs. I’m one of the rooms the hard wood floors were in great condition underneath, just both to our color liking. After sanding them down we applied Minwax® Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner before staining them a different color. Minwax® Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner was extremely easy to work with and went on really easy. I just took a cheap white tshirt that I bought and and applied the Minwax® Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner with that. I have some old antique furniture that I picked up so I will definitely purchase Minwax® Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner again when I want to stain that.

Pre Treat It
I used this stuff years ago when using pine and found it to be very effective to stop blotching and allow for much better coverage of either stain or poly or urethane finish. I used it on everything now as it seals up the end grains and open face grains very well. It then allow more mileage from whatever you are putting on your project.

Great results for pine!
I used this finishing an entryway bench that I made out of dimensional pine. It worked great for making the application of the stain nice and even. I followed up with Minwax Hickory Gel stain, and I was very happy with the results. It ended up plenty dark and worked with just one coat.
