Can this planter be placed on top of 3” wide rail without falling off?
I don’t think so. There are 2 grooves in the planter and the smallest one is still wider than 3”. (Approx 3.5” width for smaller groove and 5.5” for larger one). In all likelihood, it will fit over your railing but it will probably not sit flush and may wobble/ fall off.

How do I make this self watering? There's no pipe that comes with it?
It is self watering because of the depth of the lowest edges that have a water reservoir build in; holds water, but no plant root

These planters state they can be used on a 2" railing (eg metal balcony railing). Has anyone tried them in this way? It appears in the photos that the piece of the planter that fits over a railing is much wider than 2". Thank you for our help. Pat
I believe they are meant for a 2x4 or 2x6 railing. That’s why they appear wider than 2 inches. They are just slightly less than 4inches at their narrowest part.

Will this fit over a 6 inch railing (a true 6 inch, not a 2x6)? Other pots that say they will fit on a 2x6 are only for a 5.5 inch railing.

Where exactly do you drill holes for overflow protection? Unfortunately I wasnt Aware you had to drill holes in this pot. Ive already filled it with soil and plants. Also, doesnt the soil Fall through the slots thus clogging up the reservoir?
If you flip the planter over to its underside you'll see 2 deep indentations. There's fine print stamped around the indents that tells you to punch out the plastic in the centre. I drilled them out with a 3/8" drill bit. You can also use a screw driver and hammer.

how does a harmony self watering rail planter work
The DCN Harmony Railing Planter will fit on either a 2x4 or 2x6 railing and comes with 2 inside saucer. These saucers keeps the soil away from the water reservoir, which fills with water. The slits in the saucer allow the roots to go through, thus becoming Self Watering. When using this planter outdoors, before you place the soil in the planter drill a hole up inside the 2 risers located on the outside of the bottom of the planter....DO NOT DRILL OUT WHEN USING INDOORS. These holes allow excess water to escape, which gives this planter overflow protection.

Nous en avons acheté 3 et vraiment nous avons du les retourner!
L'assise en "U" n'est pas assez profonde pour suffisamment de stabilité sur une rampe faite en autre chose qu'un 2x4 ou en 2x6 (en bois) et encore il faut être prudent, comme la forme a cheval sur la rampe n'est pas très profonde il n'y a pas d'effet de "contre poid" pour qu'une partie s'appuie sur le reste de la rampe.
Non seulement nous avons été mal conseillé mais le descriptif du contexte d'utilisation du produit est très très spécifique. Vraiment pas fait pour toute les rampes de balcon!

Love these deck planters
Loving the deck planters I bought. I purchased 8 of them since we have a large deck. Do not forget to drill holes in the bottom. The fact they are made in CANADA is even better. Especially with the current times. I think we all need to be buying things made in Canada. Thanks again DCN Plastic.

Great Price and Sturdy!
I just received the Railing planters I ordered and am very pleased. The planters feel very sturdy and fit snugly to my deck railings. There was no label to explain which part of the planter to drill in to. A schematic showing the inverted planter , where to drill, and how many holes, would support my investment!

Good value for the price
Since I live in the cold white north, I havent set these up yet. They do look like they will be very useful. They seem well designed and for the price, sturdy. I plan to use some wire in the middle to stop them bowing out since I suspect that the weight of the soil may do that. depth for soil and the water reservoir all seem good.

Looks good but...
I bought this about a month ago. it looks good but all the flowers I planted in it died! The bottom part holds the excess water. It seems to me that over time it got too full and caused the plants to rotten. I am going to drill a hole at the bottom to let the excess water go maybe that will help.
