Difficult to remove and install
This filter only filters water for our ice-maker. We do not have the drinking in or outside of the door water feature. As far as I can tell, the filtered water for our ice is very good. However, the device is very difficult to remove and install, especially for arthritic fingers and hands. I usually throw out at least 2 buckets of ice afterwards, as the ice that comes out after installing a new filter is dirty. I mean really dirty! so what's up with that? There is little, if any, deposit sediment in the bottom of a glass when the ice is melted, a good thing. Wish the engineers could design a filter not so hard to remove or install!

GE Refrigerator Water Filter
1) I will never buy another GE appliance. The refrigerator this goes in (Purchased from Lowe's) shocked my wife when new due to faulty wiring. Her ring made contact with the stainless steel and sparks flew across our new kitchen. Lowe's was of very little help and GE customer service took several days to come out (was not a priority to them). Meanwhile, my old refrigerator was gone and had cold food to store with small children in the house. Disappointed in both Lowe's and GE.
2) I have tried aftermarket filters, and this one definitely works better. This particular one has a computer chip on the side, some aftermarket filters are not recognized by the refrigerator.

Replacement is difficult
This refrigerator came with the GE package of appliances in our new house. I don't like the machine, but am not going to replace a brand new appliance. We did, however, purchase an extended warranty for it, just in case.
Replacing the filter in this refrigerator is difficult, unless you are either very tall, or stand on a step stool. Even if you are pulling it straight out, it is very, very difficult to remove. And equally difficult to install the new one. This filter doesn't last near long enough for the steep price point, and you're stuck using a GE filter, to make sure it is compatible electronically.

Chip Reader, Why?
These filters have a device on them that tells the refrigerator when 6 months is up. Who decided this was an acceptable amount of time? I don't have a house full of people. When you don't replace the filter, it displays how many days the filter has past the 6 month period. If you use the filter bypass cartridge, it displays that it's unfiltered. Is there a way to turn off the filter status display?

Pricey, but does a great job.
I think $50 is too much to spend on a water filter that lasts 6 months, but it does a great job of filtering our water and it does last about 6 months. Our water is hardly drinkable without it, and with this filter there is very little taste to our water. We use it constantly and it lasted almost exactly 6 months, but would prefer it be in the $30-$40 price range.

Not so good
We use Zero Water filter pitchers for our drinking water. We were hoping to be able to use our cold filtered water from the refrigerator. We tested the water with our Zero Water filter testers on water from the fridge after replacing the old filter with a BRAND NEW one. It tested well over the limit where it is recommended to replace a zero water filter filter. It did test lower than it did before we switched out the nasty old fridge filter, but I'm not drinking the water dispensed from the fridge and neither is anyone else. Having this expensive option on our refrigerator was a waste of our money. We will not use it.

The filter that expires whether used or not
I bought three filters and after six moths of use of one of them, the refrigerator informed me I needed to replace the filter. I installed one of the new ones only to receive an expired filter message. I installed the other new one and it likewise expired.
This "timed" filter is not consumer friendly nor cost helpful.

Only lasts 2 months. Extremily expencive
I bought 2 and each lasted only 2 months. I thought the first was defected but the second lasted 2 months. It is cheaper to drink beer that filtered water from RPWFE. I do not recommend it.
