Is this extension kit compatible with Craftsman Chain drive openers
Yes, the extension kit will fit on your Craftsman opener, provided you are using square type rails.

My door is 8.5 feet. The 8 foot extension worked years ago when I installed a Lift Master with about 3 inches spare. Can I use an 8ft or will I need a 10?

This is a CHAIN rail extension.
The review with 1 star is for a belt extension kit. This is a chain extension. Belt drives and chain drives are not the same. I had little issue with this extension on my CHAIN opener for my 8' door.

Must have for tall doors

Good extension rail kit.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This fits most Chamberlain chain drive openers. I needed this for an 8 ft. door. Get a friend and take your time during installation. Read the directions and you'll be just fine.

Costly and iffy extension
When our old garage door opener quit I bought a Chamberlain Whisper Drive at Lowe's. Since one only replaces garage door openers every decade or two, it did not occur to me that there may be different types for different garage doors. My door apparently is taller than average, and so I found that I needed an 8-foot extension kit to make the Chamberlain opener work for me.
The local Lowe's had the kit, at a princely cost of US$47. The kit contained a metal extension piece, a longer belt and a few small pieces. The belt and some of the pieces replaced the belt and pieces that came with the standard opener.
Installation was not difficult as long as you followed the (very good) manual closely. However, the extension added yet another modular length to the rail of the Chamberlain opener, adding another "klunk" sound to the succession of klunks whenever the opener is operated and runs over its rail. It seems to make little sense to offer a belt-driven "Whisper" drive that then makes so much noise running over the modular rail.
Another problem with the extension is that it adds more length to the belt which doesn't have any guide and tends to droop even when properly tensioned. With the stock tensioning, the belt flopped around during operation, and I had to tension it significantly harder than stock.
To add to the misery, two days after I bought this $47 piece extension, Lowe's lowered the price to $35...

Confusing
The 8ft extension is not intended to be an addition to the parts needed to assemble the purchased opener, it is intended to replace some of the parts. Only a person that has inside knowledge or reads all owner manuals before assemblying would realize it before it is too late. From a protecting the environment perspective, this is not a good strategy.
