I am using inside but next summer I want to put outside, should I drill a whole or not. What is the best thing to do?
I drilled a whole to use outside this summer and have now moved inside. I place a piece of press and seal wrap over hole and placed a tray under just in case. So far no leaks on my hardwood floor.

How much space does the insert take up? Meaning how many inches do you have to add the soil & plant?
About 20 to 24 inches

Do you fill the entire thing with soil or is there an insert??
Thank you for supporting our line of 100% Canadian Made Lawn & Garden Products. If you are planting for Outdoor use, you drill a hole up inside the riser located on the outside of the bottom of the planter. You then fill the planter with soil and plant material. You now simply add water from the top until excess seeps out from under the planter. This indicates that the reservoir is now full. Now when it rains or when you add water, the reservoir will be refilled, however the overflow hole you have created will not allow over-watering. The roots will grow down through the soil, through the slits in the inside saucer and into the water......thus self watering. It's that simple. NOTE: We do not advise that you drill out the riser when using indoors. Thank you. DCN

Can these planters be left outside in winter or should they be brought inside
Yes, it is best if they are brought indoors during the winter as there may be some water left in the reservoir that could freeze.

Do these pots have an insert so that you don’t need to fill the whole pot with soil?
The DCN Harmony Planter does have an inside saucer. This saucer keeps the soil away from the water reservoir, which fills with water. The slits in the saucer allow the roots to go through, thus becoming Self Watering. When using this planter outdoors, before you place the soil in the planter drill a hole up inside the riser located on the outside of the bottom of the planter....DO NOT DRILL OUT WHEN USING INDOORS. This hole allows excess water to escape, which gives this planter overflow protection.
