How good is your woodfiller on older woodstrip flooring(1 3/4 x 3/8)?After applying is it safe to walk on or will it crack after some time?
Hello. As long as the older wood is in sound condition (it isn't peeling or lifting), our Stainable Wood Filler should be fine for use. However, here are some helpful tips to help ensure a successfull project. . Minwax Stainable Wood Filler accepts stain, though sometimes at a different rate from the surrounding wood. This is often due to the natural porosity, age, or moisture content of the wood. Please try these suggestions, based on lab tests for the Minwax Stainable Wood Filler, to get a closer match to the surrounding stained wood:
1.) Lightly sand filler before applying stain (no finer than 100 grit.) Over-sanding or using a finer grit tends to close pores.
2.) Stain as soon a possible after filler hardens, following label instructions for the stain. The longer the filler cures, the harder and less porous it will be, and therefore the less stain it will absorb.
3.) If the first coat of stain is not as dark as desired, in a sample area use a piece of 100-grit sandpaper and dampen the sandpaper with the stain you are using. Use this paper to wet sand the Stainable Wood Filler. I would recommend rubbing out the area with light pressure in the same direction as the wood grain. Increase your rubbing/sanding pressure as needed. You should notice that the combination of the stain and sandpaper is blending the Wood Filler compound with the surrounding stained wood. Here again, practice your technique in a test area or inconspicuous spot.
4.) If the spots are so small that the wet sanding technique is not practical (finish nail holes), you may have to use a topical stain, such as Minwax Gel Stain, in a matching color, and using an artist's brush, paint the stain lightly on the spots. Rather than wiping, allow the stain to dry on the surface, which may take up to 48 hours. If desired, to achieve more of a wood grain effect, 5 minutes after applying the stain, use a dry brush to drag through the stain in the direction of the wood grain, then let dry. These techniques will help blend the filler with the surrounding stained wood. Yes, it is safe to walk on but like anything else, you will have to replace over time; more so if the wood is in older condition.

Works as advertised
Like some others who reviewed, I bought this on reputation and I'm using other Minwax products. After applying it to unfinished oak to fill some gaps the edges turned black. So I went back and read some reviews and saw other people had the same problem. Thought I would have to remake the piece but I got the palm sander with 60 grit and the black staining sanded right out. I went through the grades to 220, used Minwax Pre-stain, Minwax English Chestnut stain, and Minwax satin finish. The gaps I repaired are un-noticeable. If you project can't be sanded or you are unwilling to spend the time and effort to sand, don't buy this product. Otherwise it works great.

This wood filler is NOT stainable
This wood filler ruined our woodworking project. It does not hold a stain even though we used minwax stain. It also leaves a residue, kind of like an oil stain wherever it touches the wood. I haven't had this problem with any other wood filler and never thought to check reviews before buying this when I ran out of my other wood filler. I thought the leading manufacturer of wood stain would know how to make a stainable wood filler. I was very wrong.

Awfull
Worst wood filler I have used in 40+ years of woodworking. Needed some filler to complete a job and that is all Ithaca NY Lowe's now carries. Feels like it has fine sand in it, reminds me of flooring grout rather than filler. Will not fill fine cracks, and has minimal "stick" or tackiness, not smooth enough to do a proper job. Never again.

Does not live up to its name
This product is a long shot short of the already low expectations I had set for it. The consistency out a brand new just opened tube is closer to semi-damp sand than to wood filler. It is nearly impossible to pack into any crevice when following the instructions on the container.
On the plus side, the places it ends up after falling (which is certainly will) are easily sanded to remove the spillage.

NOT PERFECT, BUT WORKS
Finding a truly transparent stainable wood filler is tough. I've searched. I wish that the Miniwax Stainable Wood Filler would truly mate with the wood grain and take the stain accordingly, but it remains visible on the finished project. The real issue difficulty for me is squeezing the filler from the tube. Since I was back-filling a large project, prolonged hard squeezing stopping periodically to de-clog the tube neck, convinced me that the tube must be old stock. So I traveled a distance to find the product at another retailer and found the same difficulty releasing the filler from the tube. I know, so sad.

Very Bad Choice for stain..
Have used minwax products with very good results. First time I tried this brand of wood filler, due to its name, and it was the only one they had. IT DOES NOT ACCEPT STAIN, including minwax brand. Will never purchase again. However it may accept paints, I don't intend to try. Most likely I will return for a refund.

Poor, poor quality
I wish I had read the reviews before buying this, but have never had a problem with Minwax products before, so I ignorantly purchased this filler based on earlier experience with the manufacturer.
As others have stated, the consistency is like coarse sand -- not suitable for smaller, shallower holes to fill. But what was MOST disconcerting is that it does NOT accept stain --- even Minwax stain. I was refinishing an old oak coffee table and end tables, and the coffee table had some worm holes on one side of the top surface. If all three tables had had similar holes, I would have left them in for the "character" they leant the wood, but the holes were only on one of the tables, so I thought I should mask them by filling. Alas! After staining the table with Minwax Golden Oak, those holes now show up worse than before --- the filler didn't even begin to accept stain. I wish I had left the holes as they were.
The only reason I give this product a star is that it does in fact dry very quickly.

This stainable wood filler does NOT absorb stain
I tried to apply multiple coats of stain to the wood filler but it seemed to repel the stain instead of absorb the stain. I thought maybe i need to let it dry a day then try to stain again and that didn't work either.
