Mason jar wall planter

I love vintage wood signage. But I find that on top of being hard to find, they’re often super expensive. So, I figured I can build my own, right?

I don’t regret it at all!

Material

Self-leveling hanger 5 pine boards 1"x2"x6'Hose clamp ¼" MDF panel Wood glue Chalk paint Mason jars Wood stain Nail strips Safety goggles Work gloves

Circular saw Nailer Drill Paint roller Brush Measuring tape Angle square

Prepare the frame

1.1 - Measure and cut the pieces of pine at 24" with a 45-degree angle.
1.2 - Make a small cut in the pieces in order to insert the MDF panel.
1.3 - Before assembling, stain the pine. Let dry the required time.
1.4 - Glue and nail 3 pieces of the frame together.

Pro Tip

Staining the pieces before assembly will make your life so much easier! I used Minwax in the shade Early American.

Prepare the shiplap

2.1 - Measure and cut the MDF to create shiplap boards at your desired width.
2.2 - Paint the planks without forgetting the sides.
2.3 - On the MDF backboard, paint large strips approximately where the boards will join.
2.4 - Let dry.

Pro Tip

Not painting the entire backboard will allow for less waste. I look at where there may be small gaps and paint large strips to make sure the space is invisible.

Assemble the frame and the shiplap

3.1 - Slide the MDF backboard into the pine frame.
3.2 - Secure the last piece of pine to ensure everything stays into place.
3.3 - Using quick-dry wood glue, glue the MDF shiplap panels into place.

Paint the Mason jars

4.1 - Paint the Mason jars using chalk paint. Let dry.
4.2 - Apply a second coat if needed.
4.3 - To install the jars, simply screw the hose clamps to the panel and insert the Mason jars.

Pro Tip

For a more aged look, I sanded the painted jars with a fine grain paper.

Decorate the panel and plant

5.1 - Decorate the panel however you wish. For a vintage look, lightly sand over any paint applied.
5.2 - Place a bit of earth into the Mason jars and plant flowers or fine herbs!

Pro Tip

I’m not the greatest calligrapher! I found the words ''Fresh flowers'' on Pinterest and copied them onto a sheet of paper. I flipped it over and scribbled with a pencil over each letter – kind of like carbon paper! Then, I traced the letters onto the board.
