How to Install a Sliding Door

What’s easy to install, glides smoothly, saves space, and has a sleek, modern look? A sliding door, of course! Find out how to install one yourself. It’s easier than you think.

Difficulty level: Intermediate
Duration: 2 hours
Before You Start
Measure the space where the door will go when it’s open. There needs to be enough room for the door to open fully . Be sure to measure both sides if you’re installing a double door. Check that there aren’t any outlets or light switches on the wall since they could prevent the door from opening properly.

Locate the Studs and Measure for the Height

  • 1.1 - The door rail needs to be secured to the wall studs to ensure it’s solid. Use a stud finder to locate them.
  • 1.2 - Mark where the studs are on the wall.
  • 1.3 - Measure the height of the rail. This kind of door needs to sit exactly 1¾” higher than the door’s full height.

Pro Tip

Ask for help installing the rail. Make sure it’s centred and that it covers the entirety of the existing door opening.

Installing the Rail

  • 2.1 - Line up the rail with the marks on the wall using a level.
  • 2.2 - Use the rail as a guide to mark the screw holes.
  • 2.3 - Use a drill to make pilot holes using your screw hole marks.
  • 2.4 - Secure the rail with screws starting in the middle and don’t overtighten. Don’t add the screws at the ends just yet, as stoppers will need to be inserted on each side.

Check the Door and Install the Hangers

  • 3.1 - Check that the door is right side up and install the hangers. If your door is not pre-drilled, drill the holes.
  • 3.2 - Place the door on the rail to see if it slides well.
  • 3.3 - Figure out where the floor guides will be and mark them using tape. The guides need to touch the door when it’s both opened and closed.
  • 3.4 - Install the guides to prevent the door from swinging.

Pro Tip

Make sure you have the right floor screws for your flooring material before installing the door.
