Garage Storage

Decluttering, effective storage, good organization… words that sound good to the ear. This shelving unit is the first step in cleaning the mess that is the garage. Hammer away! See the plan for plank dimensions and the assembly instructions.

Cut the beams and plywood

  • 1.1 - Measure and cut the beams and sheets of plywood as indicated on the plan.

Assemble the right shelves

  • 2.1 - Put 2 – 1 ½" x 2 ½" x 8' on the ground and place 4 – 1 ½" x 2 ½" x 24" pieces in between.
  • 2.2 - Secure the perpendicular pieces with 26" in between.
  • 2.3 - Secure a 2' x 8' sheet of plywood on top of the rectangle.
  • 2.4 - Repeat steps 2.1 to 2.3 for the second shelf.
  • 2.5 - Screw 2 – 1 ½" x 2 ½" x 80" beams to the end of one shelf.
  • 2.6 - Center the second shelf and screw into the legs.
  • 2.7 - Screw the other two beams into place.

Pro tip

The structure can be painted, stained, or varnished for a nicer finish.

Assemble the left shelves

  • 3.1 - Put 2 – 1 ½" x 2 ½" x 48" on the ground and place 3 –1 ½" x 2 ½" x 24" in between.
  • 3.2 - Secure 2 – 1 ½" x 2 ½" x 24" at the ends and one in the middle.
  • 3.3 - Secure a 24" x 48" sheet of plywood on top of the rectangle.
  • 3.4 - Repeat steps 3.1 to 3.3 for the 3 other shelves.
  • 3.5 - Screw 2 – 1 ½" x 2 ½" x 80" beams to the end of one shelf.
  • 3.6 - Center another shelf and screw into the legs.
  • 3.7 - Center and secure the 2 remaining shelves.
4

Install on the wall

  • 4.1 - Assemble the left and right units.
  • 4.2 - Secure the storage shelf solidly on the wall using corner braces and anchors.
