How good is your woodfiller on older woodstrip flooring(1 3/4 x 3/8)?After applying is it safe to walk on or will it crack after some time?

Asked by: Fred 3
Hello. As long as the older wood is in sound condition (it isn't peeling or lifting), our Stainable Wood Filler should be fine for use. However, here are some helpful tips to help ensure a successfull project. . Minwax Stainable Wood Filler accepts stain, though sometimes at a different rate from the surrounding wood. This is often due to the natural porosity, age, or moisture content of the wood. Please try these suggestions, based on lab tests for the Minwax Stainable Wood Filler, to get a closer match to the surrounding stained wood: 1.) Lightly sand filler before applying stain (no finer than 100 grit.) Over-sanding or using a finer grit tends to close pores. 2.) Stain as soon a possible after filler hardens, following label instructions for the stain. The longer the filler cures, the harder and less porous it will be, and therefore the less stain it will absorb. 3.) If the first coat of stain is not as dark as desired, in a sample area use a piece of 100-grit sandpaper and dampen the sandpaper with the stain you are using. Use this paper to wet sand the Stainable Wood Filler. I would recommend rubbing out the area with light pressure in the same direction as the wood grain. Increase your rubbing/sanding pressure as needed. You should notice that the combination of the stain and sandpaper is blending the Wood Filler compound with the surrounding stained wood. Here again, practice your technique in a test area or inconspicuous spot. 4.) If the spots are so small that the wet sanding technique is not practical (finish nail holes), you may have to use a topical stain, such as Minwax Gel Stain, in a matching color, and using an artist's brush, paint the stain lightly on the spots. Rather than wiping, allow the stain to dry on the surface, which may take up to 48 hours. If desired, to achieve more of a wood grain effect, 5 minutes after applying the stain, use a dry brush to drag through the stain in the direction of the wood grain, then let dry. These techniques will help blend the filler with the surrounding stained wood. Yes, it is safe to walk on but like anything else, you will have to replace over time; more so if the wood is in older condition. Regards, Minwax Customer Support

Stainable Wood Filler - 29 mL is rated 3.5 out of 5 by 188.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Absolutely waste money This filler in a squeeze tube is a bad joke. The filler is not squeezable. It has the consistency of dried out plumbers putty. Very dry and crumbly as if it has sat out and dried out. But this was a sealed container, so QC was/is very poor. Hardly to think this is produced in USA. Shame on Minwax. Absolutely wastsing money on this.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Don't Buy This Product Minwax should remove this product from production. It took all my effort to squeeze small amounts from the punctured opening of the newly purchased tube to fill recessed screw holes . The consistency was like sand. I wasted my money as I do not intend to even try to use the large remainder of the 6 oz. tube. I

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Terrible product The filler would not accept stain despite the prominent claim that it does ("stainable"). Even though I sanded after the filler had dried, the wood did not stain properly - there were light streaks wherever the filler had even touched. In addition, the promptly sealed tube (only used once) had dried out and would not come out of the tube after only 3-4 months of storage in a cool basement. I called Minwax to complain and received little interest from the representative, though he did offer to refund my $ if I sent in receipt (which I had tossed).

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Paintable not Stainable!!!! I have been a wood worker for 45 years. Companies like say their wood filler products are stainable. Tried this product as I thought I have not tried a stainable wood filler in 25 years. Guess what, they have made no progress. Yet they still claim it is stainable. Back to mixing my own fillers.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Bad consistency Almost impossible to squeeze out of the tube. What did come out was dry and crumbly and wouldn’t adhere to the wood. Waste of money and time.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Saw dust in a tube. I purchased this product and when I opened it i couldn't get any of the filler out of the tube. When I finally did get something out it had the consistency of saw dust. I would like my money back Minwax. I probably will not purchase any more Minwax products.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Try a can of Wood Putty I didn't need a lot so I bought this small tube. First, it was hard to get a hole to work in the applicator. Then, as hard as you can squeeze the tube, hardly any product comes up to the hole you created in the tube. I used it for three nail holes and it wasn't easy. Tried to use it again, and it is almost as if all the product in the tube is set up already. Do yourself a favor & buy the product in the can or plastic container.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Should be zero stars Horrible product for stain. It ruined my project. You can actually Google how this product has broken countless hearts. It should not be on the shelves as advertised. It may have other uses but STAINABLE WOOD FILLER IT IS NOT!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Ruined my project First, i had to cut open the tube to get it out. Second, it doest sand smooth. Lastly, it leaves an oily residue around the hole that makes the wood unstainable. Complete garbage! I had to remove 2 boards from my footboard.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Takes stain very well I was very skeptical if this will take stain from minwax oil based stain. But it stained very well. I guess, Minwax would have tested their item stain to call this wood filler stainable!! I did apply pre stain to this before staining.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Ruined! This “stainable” wood filler absolutely ruined my project. I’ve worked for a week on this dining table for my new home! I used Minwax wood filler to cover screw holes however when the stain was applied to the table the stain wouldn’t take to anywhere this “stainable filler” touched! Now i have to put this hideous looking table in my dining room!!!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Meh. Bought this to patch nail holes from baseboard installation. Other reviews are right, it has a very sandy texture, however I sanded it down and when painted it looks 100% like part of the board. I have not tried staining it, and it is extremely difficult (as in "full pressure squeezing") to squeeze out of the tube, especially now that I have used roughly two-thirds of it and am trying to get that last bit.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Don't waste $5!! I agree with other review 100%. I bought this because I thought would be easy to apply. Forget it! I had trouble squeezing it out of the hole and then it didn't even stick to the holes that I was filling. I ended up squeezing out large amounts onto a putty knife and applying it that way. The working time for this was about 2 minutes. So out of the 1-oz tube i made used 1/4-oz. What a waste. Never again.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Difficult to use, but good end result This stuff is nearly impossible to get out of the tube, and once I did it was very dry and grainy. I had quite a hard time getting it pushed down into the cracks where I needed it. I let it dry overnight then came back and sanded the whole piece thoroughly with 120 grit sandpaper. I was using pine boards to make a countertop for my laundry room and I was looking for a rough, rustic look, but I didn't want any large cracks. After sanding, I applied Minwax pre-stain conditioner and followed with 2 coats of Minwax stain in Provincial. To my relief, the filler took the stain quite nicely and unless you know where to look, it's hidden quite well. The photos were taken after the first coat of stain. I applied a second coat and it looks even better. My big grievance with the product is the difficulty in use, but the results are excellent so I would use it again but would not buy it in a tube. Rated 5 out of 5 by from ALWAYS USED THIS FOR WOOD FILLING JOBS!!! Great wood filler! It’s easy to use and I can always use water to make it how I want it flowing! Used this for a Tiki Bar, garage work table, garage shelving prior to painting, and coffee table refinishing. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Product Hardened and Set-up Before Use This wood filler was hardened and almost impossible to get anything out of the tube. I had a very small job to do, hence the 1 oz. tube. I got less than a tenth of the product out of the tube. It was not pliable. Obviously Minwax has a major problem with the seal on their packaging.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good if you can get it out of the tube First, I recommend the product, just not in the squeeze tube. I used this on a few projects that were being painted and it worked great, but the squeeze tube was was extremely difficult get the product out. I ended up cutting the top off and scooping out with my putty knife. Super easy to apply (one you get it out of the tube), dries quickly, sanded nicely and took paint well. I noticed that it did lightly stain the wood I was working with. I painted both of my projects, so this was not an issue for me, but it might affect a project that is being stained.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Sand in a tube This is a really bad wood filler, at least for small holes, it is mostly sand or something of that texture. Dried hard as a rock making clean up a big hassle. Don't bother unless you plan on sanding a lot!!! Good news is Lowe's refunded the cost of it. Use a "my Lowe's card". Makes everything much easier, and Lowe's honors veterans with 10% off which the tie into the "my Lowe's card". Great concept, can't imagine shopping anywhere else.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good filler, but not very stainable I would give this wood filler 5 stars, but for the fact that it is labeled 'stainable', and it did not stain well at all. It was easy to apply, smooth, and clean up the excess filler (I'm a messy worker), and it dried quickly. I used Minwax stain for the wood and the filler. The wood stained beautifully, but the stain just seemed to soak up and disappear into the filler, leaving it still noticeably pale even after repeated staining. I wound up coloring the filler with a colored pencil to make it blend in. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very good filler I needed wood filler to fill in some nail holes and to fix some damage to hand rail, this product has worked well. I would definitely use it again.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from HORRIBLE PRODUCT NOT Stainable. Beware. you can still see the areas filled and any surrounding area that it may have touched even if it is sanded.
Date published: 2020-05-06
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Does not stain Filled the holes, however, did not take the stainer. Left with discolored pieces of wood.
Date published: 2020-05-04
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Bad Product First problem was that I had to squeeze the tube hard with both hands to get any product out of the tube. The product was orange in color and did not match any wood I have ever seen. It does not accept stain and appears orange under whatever stain you use over it. It does not easily sand off the wood. This poorly conceived product added hours of work to my project.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Wood Filler I bought this Minwax wood filler and a tube of competitor brand ELMER'S Probond Professional Strength 6-oz Natural Wood Filler E8180. I'm getting my kitchen painted and I needed to fill in the holes left from cabinet hardware, as I was replacing those as well. The Minwax wood filler product would simply not come out of the tube, no matter how long I kneaded the tube to make sure the contents were well mixed. I eventually abandoned it for the Elmers. Maybe I just got a bad tube, but I wouldn't buy it again given this experience.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Terrible & Disappoited I'm so glad I have the habit of testing new products I have never used before on a scrap piece of lumber because this wood filler is terrible & would have destroyed my much detailed project, first it was all I had to get it to come out of the tube, no matter how big I cut the opening, then when some of the filler finally came out it felt & looked half dried out, very hard to work with & felt very grainy, when I applied it to my test board it left a stain outside the hole I filled that would not sand out even with 80 Grit. I was very disappointed,I expected a lot more from minwax,I have used their stains for years & have always been pleased. so the Minwax is back to Lowe's & back to using my old faithful DAP. Like it's been said, "If it ain't broke don't fix it"

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wood Filler in a tube I had replaced part of the wood on an outside door. I had a area that I needed to built up, this stuff dries quickly and after a couple of coats it sanded nicely, I was a little skeptical but this was very easy to work with, after painting the surface it looks great. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Fills nicely, dries quickly, sandable, grainy This filler product is much better than the filler I used to use that came in a small can. You can squeeze the tube and the nozzle will place the filler where you need it, particularly helpful when filling small holes or cracks. It dries fairly quickly, and is easily sandable. The filled area tends to be grainier than the surrounding wood, so it stands out a little too much when staining. Even when painting, you can see some of the grainy-ness in the filled area. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Don’t waste your time/money. I’ve been working on custom signs and recently had a friend give me some fence boards, to which had previous nail holes in them. I figured I’d head over to Lowe’s for a cheap wood filler, and found this so called “stainable” wood filler. Wow. After following the instructions, (applying wood filler, sanding, removing residue), I began to stain my sign & was left with nice tan colored blotches on my sign. Long story short, it doesn’t work and I’m annoyed. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]
