Does this 420cc Cub Cadet have a 3 or 4 blade impeller? Also, do the shear pins last as this is a powerful blower engine? Thanks

Asked by: dkmcl2
Thank you for your question. This premium Cub Cadet snow thrower utilizes a three blade second stage impellor. The shear pins connecting the auger to its shaft are designed to let go in the event of an impact with hard objects like a curb or items buried in the snow, providing a measure of protection for critical components in the gearbox. They are easily replaced if needed, use only original equipment pins Lowe's item # 61255.

I have a 420cc ,model 31ah5esu596 cub cadet 30" cut, that l bought at lowes,l was wandering why are there no grease fittings on the auger,,or anywhere in the front, side of each bearing ,nothing ,is this a new system ,l thought this is a heavy duty blower ?

Asked by: Patn
Grease fittings are the best device to lube there shafts. If they have grease fittings, all you do is attach a grease gun and apply grease till it runs out the end, the inside or outside of the auger shaft. What could be easier. My Murray 30" snow blower is 25 years old now, it runs great and is in perfect condition, with grease fittings on the auger shaft. Why do these Cub Cadet not have any? Removing the shear pins would be much more work and there are so many of them.

What engine do they run on this machine?

Asked by: Corndawgg
These engines are called Cub Cadet, or MTD -- but are made in China. They are Powermore Engines, copy cat of a Honda motor but not even close to a real Honda. Read about Powermore on Small Engine Tech sites and they show you the difference the China version is. They are made with short cuts in their assembly and may or may not last a long time like a real Honda will. I'm not saying Honda is the best, but these Powermore are used on in-expensive lawn mowers and snow blowers, again.. made in China and made cheaper.

What would the horsepower be for the 420cc cub cadet engine?

Asked by: Dave Currier
I just went out to the shed to look at my craftsman machine. It's 305cc and 13.5hp, 24" cut.

Just received this machine and noticed that it takes substantial force to put the gear lever into 2nd reverse gear position. Is this normal?

Asked by: Dillan
It does take a good tug to move the gear lever into the reverse gears and this likely deliberate and normal.  Accidentally putting the machine in reverse would not be good for an operator that thinks the snowblower is still in a forward gear!

Snowblower - 2 stages - 420 CC - 30" is rated 3.9 out of 5 by 32.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Blew up twice I bought this model 2 months ago. The first time I went to use it, it worked for 2-3 minutes then the thing blew up right where the snow impeller meets the motor. The casing outside cracked through and it obviously stopped throwing snow. We exchanged the model hoping was a select defect. The next thrower. Exact same model blew up after 3 uses, each time used only about 40 minutes. I am returning this one today and buying an ariens. The snow impeller cracked through the casing same as the first time but not as badly. The machine still throws snow but is now running rough. I had high hopes for the cub cadet with the powerful 420cc engine but it's proven badly 2 times now in a very short period.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from work horse Bought it on sale late fall 2016. So far it has been a good snow blower. Purchased it for our new house that has a 380' drive way with a double side parking area. So far it has kicked butt when it comes to moving snow. Last year wasn't much in the way of snow but this year we have got a fair bit. It does a fine job even in the damp/heavy snow. The only negative is the headlight, like so many other it is mounted in a poor location. Night time the chute is well lit but little else. Plan to get a 6" led atv light to mount on the top of the chute. Replaced the bulb in the light in the first 2months use & here it is Feb10th & it has already started acting up again. Aside from that I love it! 420cc motor just powers through everything!!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great machine, couple minor things Bought this 30" machine about 2 years ago and I love it. Put lots of hours on it and it's still my favorite to date. The couple minor things are the cable adjustment lock bolt bracket is a little wimpy, and the cable is a little light weight for an otherwise solid machine. The steering controls are awesome, and the big tires give it sure footing. Mine has a joy stick shoot control which works as well today as when it was new. This is a great machine and a good price point in comparison to other brands in this size and power range. Wet slushy snow that clogs shoots, is less of a problem on this machine than others I've owned, but I'm still going to add the rubber "impeller kit" that I came across online as I was browsing some maintenance sites on line. In my opinion, over all, this is one of the best machines on the msrkrt.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Workhorse Bought this machine 3 years ago now and decided I would write a review now. The 420 cc engine is very powerful and very easy to start, in fact so easy I stopped using the electric start since it always starts with one pull. It clears deep snow on my 200’ driveway and an additional 3 car parking area. 2 issues I’ve had are a no start condition which turned out to be water in the fuel system that froze. I put a heater under it and it started right up after a few hours. The other problem happens when you park a hot machine with the 2nd stage impeller in the 6 o’clock position. Snow melts and forms a puddle under the impeller chute, and then freezes solid. Next time you go to use it the impeller is frozen solid. The solution is to always check that no impeller blade is left in the 6 o’clock position. Other than these 2 tiny issues this is a great machine.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works great despite what Rocko says. Despite what Rocko's review says, this is a very powerful and capable snow-blower that chews through just about anything. I have gone through hard packed snow that previous blowers that I've owned would have stalled in and this one barely noticed. I am very happy. Rocko, who complained that this blower wouldn't pick up and throw 2 inches of slush apparently has never owned a snowblower, or at the very least has never tried to blow 2 inches of slush, because no 2 stage (or 3 stage) will throw that due to the weight and lack of material. Perhaps a single stage would fling it, but you can't pick up a few inches of slush with an auger, no matter who makes the blower. The only issue that I've had is that the headlight stopped working after a month of use, however I haven't had a chance to diagnose it so it's possible that something is just loose or the bulb burned.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from excellent machine I have owned a number of snow blowers over the years and have been disappointed with most of them. We have lived in a few places with different sized driveways but the constant is the 400ft driveway at the cottage. The last snowblower I owned that didn't back down from that challenge was a 1974 32" John Deere my grandfather used to own, that got to the point it just could not be rebuilt any more. When the beast turned 25yrs I finally upgraded, or so I thought. Over the last 16yrs I've tried a Craftsman, a new John Deere, and a borrowed Husqvarna. They were all fine for the smaller driveways at the house, but every one struggled with clearing the cottage drive, and the last time I used the John Deere I had to push it up and down the driveway, it was time for an upgrade. I was looking for a basic blower without any fancy features, but when I saw this machine on sale last winter I started comparing specs with others on the market and found that when it came to features they were all comparable, but most had smaller engines, and it's price before sale was lower than most of it range. So on sale it won out over the others. It was the right choice. The combination of the 30" cut and the 420cc engine out throws that old '74, 32" John Deere that I beat th c+@p out of for so many years, something no other machine I've tried since has to been able to do. Time will truly tell but this machine really proved to be worth the money its first winter in the bush.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 420cc 30inch 2 stage Bought myself this for a retirement gift. Things need to be easier when you retire. Used it for the first time yesterday clean the double wide double long driveway and shot the snow 35 feet away. Had to readjust the chute as the neighbor two driveways over was angry. Took it out onto the road in front of her house on a crescent and did the slop on the road it blew at about 8 feet even though it was slop. Even in first gear it's fast. Branded into the snow pile that the wife thought she would make on the front corner of the driveway making it impossible for people to see around the corner and blew the solid ice and chunks 35 ft up onto the front lawn. What a machine very happy with it and it's performance. First time starting usually difficult but all I did was put in gas pump the primer twice and pulled the cord in the way it went. Easy enough for my wife to use. Very impressed.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Snowblower Bought this snowblower 2 weeks ago and before we were to have a good snow fall. I assembled it myself which was no problem. Lowering the chute guides was easy as well since I have a gravel driveway so had to lift the chute entry up as far it would go. It will pick up stones, especially during first use, but as the snow packs it runs over the top nicely. I love the chute exit adjustment which is controlled at the control panel. The 30" cut is great and it throws snow quite far. Overall, so far, a very nice and capable machine.
