Is this cylinder pre-purged? Also the description says "Empty tank must be filled or exchanged" - what does this mean? Does this mean I need to fill the new tank at Lowes or bring in my old tank as exchange (has expired, passed the 10 year age)?

Asked by: BobbyRay
They are saying the tank is sold empty. You can bring it to any location that fills propane tanks and have it filled or refilled at future date when your tank is empty. Exchange refers to any location that will take your empty tank and you can pick up a filled tank for a fee. These locations may not be able to re-fill an empty tank, but, they have a supply of full tanks for exchange.

Worthington Propane Gas Cylinder - Steel - 20 lbs is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 147.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Propane Tank I purchased a tank from the Mustang, OK store a short time ago. One word of caution is this .... check the date on the large carry handle of the tank. These things have a "shelf life" of several years before they have to be re-tested. Get one with a date as close to the current date as possible. I found the first one was almost 3 years old so I passed on it. I took it to a place nearby and had it filled. I am not a fan of the exchange of tanks. I now own this NEW tank and I know it will service me for a long time. And, the fill as you go is cheaper than the exchange cost.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Not bad, but... This propane tank takes care of the need as well as any other. It's a solid tank and the curved "handles" make it easy to lift. But the curved handles are also a drawback if you own a Weber grill and have the built-in propane gauge - the curvature doesn't allow the handle to fit in the gauge apparatus, so that you need to turn the tank the facing away from the gauge in order to make it fit. This is precisely the opposite of how Weber recommends placing the tank on the gauge. Other than that, the tank does it's job and is in the right price range.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Propane Tank I didn't know this before, but before buying a new propane tank, check to make sure it's been pre-purged. Otherwise it will probably cost you a little extra at your first fillup for the supplier to purge it for you. These tanks are purged when you buy them.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just What I Was Looking For!! Watching the Weather Channel for the track of Hurricane Dorian knowing I had better do a final check to make sure we were ready. I noticed that I only had one propane tank. It was filled but I knew I had better get an additional tank due to the hurricane that was heading our way I was uncertain how long we would be without power to cook any meals. We had our generator but not powerful enough to operate a stove. Now with the additional tank we purchased means we’re ready as ready can be. Someone at Lowe’s sure was thinking of people like me for when I entered the store there was a pallet of propane tanks right in front with the other hurricane supply’s. Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect DOT Certified Propane Tank This is an inexpensive, high-quality propane tank with the modern OPV (Overfill-Protection Valve). It has the new external threads (righty tightey) for connecting modern grills and appliances - most of which can be hand tightened. On the inside of this tank's nozzle it still has the older style threads (left to tighten) for backwards compatibility with older "propane accessories." That said, you will still need a wrench to connect your 20 year old Webber to the older (reverse) threads. ;-) The one I got weighs in at 16.56 lbs. and when totally full weights 35.79 lbs. This means the total capacity is 19.23 lbs. (4.57 gallons) of Propane. It cost me $14.63 (at $3.25/gallon) for the initial fill. Obviously, if you bring it in to have it topped off, you pay for only the amount added to the cylinder (unless you go to a place with a flat-rate). *********************************** Now let's compare owning your own cylinder to an exchange: Exchanged Tank: Filled to only 15 lbs. (3.57 gallons) Propane for $22.95 ($6.42 / Gallon is your cost).

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Propane tank was old I like to order online and pick up in store. The tank they pulled for me was already 9 years into its 12 year timeline. Be careful to read the date before purchase.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent value It's a propane tank that's pre-purged at a good price. Will buy another to have as a backup.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from LP Tanks - Lesson 101 There's some misconceptions by a minority of folks that believe LP Tanks should come with LP in them. Essentially, you have 2 options when buying an LP Tank. The 1st option is to buy an LP Tank like this one where you can go to any LP Service station and fill/refill. The generally runs about $16 in my area. The 2nd option is to buy an Exchange LP Tank (like Blue Rhino# - the initial tank filled with LP will run close to $50. After this, you simply bring back to the Exchange store #Lowes, Sears# and swap out the tank for another tank that is already filled - this generally runs about $21. If you have a Lowes or Sears close by or simply don't grill very often, I would recommend this option since the tank you purchase otherwise has a 12 year shelf life #from the date it was initially manufactured vs bought#. However, if you don't have a Lowes or Sears close by or you like to grill a lot, it is more economical to purchase an LP Tank like this. Personally, I have one of each type of tank - I grill a lot and have a Lowes close by. I can refill this LP tank directly across the street from my neighborhood. My other tank #Blue Rhino Exchange Tank) I use for a backup in case I run out of my main supply.
