Description

Zircon® multifunction stud finder locates the center, edges, and direction of studs and joists behind walls, floors and ceilings and metal as well as live AC electrical wiring. A 4-mode switch changes modes, while the ultra-bright display screen, patented "SpotLite" pointer, and audio tone indicate target location. The signal strength indicator helps to distinguish between shallow and deep targets. "StudScan" mode locates the center, edges, and direction of wood or metal studs up to 3/4" (19mm) deep. "DeepScan" mode doubles the scanning depth to 1 1/2" (38mm). "WireWarning" detection indicates the presence of live, unshielded wiring up to 2" (51mm) deep in stud and metal scanning modes. Metal scan mode locates non-ferrous metal, such as copper pipe, up to 1 1/2" (38mm) deep, and ferrous metal, such as steel pipe, up to 3" (76mm) deep. AC scan mode locates live, unshielded AC electrical wiring up to 2" (51mm) deep. ACT (Auto Correcting Technology) automatically corrects common errors, such as when scanning begins over a stud. The ultra-bright backlit LCD display indicates target location.

Will it accurately locate wires when working near my power panel?

Asked by: Chuck1000
Hello Chuck. In AC mode the L550 will find live, unshielded 110 volt wiring so yes it should find the wiring for you. It won't identify which wire you are scanning it will just tell you where the wire is. Thank you.

Would this scanner be able to find rebars in cured concrete slabs?

Asked by: malm
It would, if the rebar is within the tool's 3 inch depth. However, for rebar, I would recommend the MT6 instead. This is a tool designed specifically to locate the metal rebar in concrete.

MultiScanner L550 Stud Finder - Yellow and Black is rated 3.7 out of 5 by 60.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Worst stud finder ever! Needed to accurately find studs (to avoid them) and also required the live AC detection to avoid hitting the AC line next one of them. I used it per the instructions and after 4hrs of OCD style trying, yes 4hrs! I gave up trying to find the studs and just did the old classic knock test and prayed that I was on the correct side of the stud that didn't have the AC power lines running down it. The old school method worked far better than this stupid thing. BTW, my walls are standard modern hand textured 1/2" drywall with wood studs like you find in all newly built homes, nothing special that would cause such errors using this product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works Great [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I love that it can find the edges and the centers of the studs. I also recently purchased the L50 and will be giving it to my daughter now that I have this one. I can't understand why so many people are having trouble getting them to work. I'm wondering if they're using them on plaster lwalls, where there's a lot of wooden slats behind the wall. I've had three and they all work great. I've hung a dozen TV wall mounts and never missed a stud. In fact, I've never missed a stud any time I've used them. So, I'm well pleased with Zircon's stud finder products.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Doesn't work, hard time finding stud center The idea is great, but the execution is not there. I bought this last week to look for the studs' center through drywall in order to anchor 4 inch screws to build customs drawers in my closet. At the very top of the drywall, there is a small gap where I can see the studs themselves, so you might ask me, why would I need a stud finder? Because I'm ocd, and I wanted to be absolutely sure I was anchoring into the studs at the bottom of the closet. However, this stud finder didn't do the job at all. I did read the instructions. I thought I might be sliding the stud finder too quickly from side to side, so I slowed down, and nothing. I slowed down even more, still nada. Yes I had a brand new battery. I'm returning this today. I had better results with zircon cheaper stud finder

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best StudFinder I have EVER Used [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] this stud finder is well worth the investment. simple to use and operate. I have had this for 4 years or more and its never let me down. Not only do i love this product, but the back battery cover was misplaced by one of our kids a few days ago (now sept 3rd 2019), and i called up customer service and was sent to tech support. ZERO HASSLE, they are sending me a free replacement. You will not regret purchasing this product. Invest the extra money and get the L550. Im Glad i did

Rated 1 out of 5 by from I have the holes to prove it I saw the display at the store. I tried it out and seemed OK. I'm hanging a new LED TV on a wall. I used the stud finder and marked all the studs I need to hang the back plate. I started piloting the holes when I noticed I didn't hit a stud. I tried my next mark same thing. I use the stud finder again, found two different studs and drilled into them. Same thing all dry wall not stud I read the directions to make sure I wasn't missing something. Did it a third time, marked and drilled again no stud. I thought I might me missing the stud or getting false readings so I cut a 10" line connecting the holes. Not one darn stud any where. I found a dry wall screw that hadn't been punched in all the way and used a plain old tape measure and knowing 16" for center. If I followed the stud finder I would be out $$$ by my new tv falling off the wall.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worked great After reading some of the reviews on here I was worried about purchasing this but the lower grade zircon I already own wasn't working on an exterior wall. This one found the studs no problem and I was able to replicate results over and over again.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Scanner for studs - wood or Metal also Electrical [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I just played with it for a short time and it seemed to work quite well from a couple premeasured wood studs that I knew near exact their location. The meter was within 1/16" - 1/8" of my measurement. It also did indicate an Electrical warning of a Hot cable within the same area. So from my first testing of this tool I'll give a 4 STAR rating. I next will do a fiberglass shower stall that will have a deeper area to the studs an we'll see how well this works on that specific application.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works where my other stud finder failed to! Purchased this model after playing with the demo in the store. Recently moved from a house into a double-wide and my old (cheaper zircon model) would not function properly on the exterior walls. My guess was maybe the insulation or something? Didn't want to spend the money on this model, but I'm sure glad I did. Figured I'd just bring it back if it didn't work any better than my smaller & cheaper model. After trying on the same wall and location on the 'regular' stud find, it failed just like the other model. I then tried it on 'deep scan' mode, and guess what? It worked perfectly and produced consistent, repeatable results! Then tested it on my kitchen table which is solid wood 1&1/2" thick with supports underneath the leaves to see how accurate it really was. Since you can see the supports underneath (simulating studs in a wall) I figured this would be a good test. It found the Exact center and edges of the supports (which are also 1&1/2" wide just like a stud)! Needless to say, this one won't be going back to the store! (on a side note - I have not had a chance to test the metal or pipe finding capabilities. Also, the live a/c wiring detection does seem a bit sensitive; but that's not necessarily a bad thing) The only negative in my opinion would be the size. It is quite large, and I find it a bit awkward to hold at times. I'm used to my older and much smaller unit, which can fit in tighter places as well. For that reason, I'll keep the old one for back-up and tight spaces.
