I need to cover pet odor in an unfinished basement. Can I use this in the cement floors?
Hi Laini,
Thank you for your question.
Our Zinsser BIN was not designed for a floor application as it will not hold up to foot traffic.
For pet odors, we recommend our Concrobium Mold Control, as it is great at not just killing mold but odors from pets as well. Apply and allow to dry. It generally dries within 2 hours, depending on temperature and humidity. If odors remain, the cement be more porous and may require a second application.
We hope this answers your question. Feel free to contact us again if you require further information.

Is this good to prime ceramic tile than put acrylic paint over it?
Hi Corza,
Thank you for your question.
If this is for a floor application; Our Zinsser BIN primer was not designed for horizontal surfaces such as floors.
If this is for walls, ceiling; we recommend our Zinssers Bulls Eye 123 if you plan on using an acrylic paint to top coat your ceramic tiles.
We hope this answers your question. Feel free to contact us again if you require further information.

Is this product the same as kilz original or BIN original red label or is the BIN RED label shellac base the only one, and is it available in 5 gallon?
BIN is shellac base, and is good for blocking bleed through from knots or water stain.

Would this be good for kitchen and bathroom cabinets?, and can I use a good paint for cabinets over it?
BIN is not a good primer to use to completely cover new wood, because it does not breath. If there is moisture in the wood, a sudden temperature change would cause the moisture to expand, pushing the BIN and topcoat off. BIN is meant a stain blocker, not a whole surface primer. If the cabinets are wood, and you have knots or water marks bleeding, treat the knots with BIN, and use 123 or PermaWhite for the whole surface

The Fix for Paperless Sheetrock
We just bought a new home and in the process of kitchen renovation we needed to remove wallpaper. Another's wall prep...or lack of it....created a situation for us that many have experienced. The wallpaper came off and so did the paper facing of the Sheetrock. I began my research on what to do. Yes we could have replaced with new but I was glad to come across this product. It works to seal the brown board. Note: One does have to sand the walls after this shellac primer product dries for smooth walls. If a textured paint is going on I would say you could right on top of it. We sanded, cleaned and painted and are very pleased with the outcome.

Great Primer
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Shellac makes a great primer because it sticks to anything and everything sticks to it. It dries very quickly and sands very easily. The only down side it that it dries so quickly that it is hard to level off with a brush. If you brush it on the to set coat looks bad. Don't worry just sand and give it another coat. Using it to spray paint would be ideal. It's great for raw wood and MFD because it won't raise the brain like a water based primer will. If you are trying to get a very nice painted finish on MFD start with two coats of this and top coat with Benjarmin Moore Advance.

trial and error but great outcome
Never used a shellac primer before and was not expecting the difficulty of using a brush with this stuff... Not the first time painting cabinets but we just remodeled the kitchen and bought unfinished cabinets that we wanted painted. First coat went on horrible and had brush strokes and completely uneven. It looks watery but dont be fooled, this stuff starts drying as soon as you apply it and becomes thick. Decided to use a foam roller like i had prevously done and the second coat came out SO much better. Sanded before with 120 and inbetween coats with 220... paint went on beautifully after using the right stuff

Sticks to Air, Laughs at Weather
“This sticks to air.”
That’s what a person who who recommended this was told by a hardware store employee.
Of course, BIN’s not quite that good at coverage, but it is excellent.
I used this to prime plywood for cutout yard decorations for Halloween. I didn’t mean to test its durability by leaving the decoration in the backyard for a year, but that’s what happened.
After a year of rain, sun, record heat, BIN was still holding strong. The acrylic paints (except the purple) I used on top of it were still vibrant and smooth, even without a top coat.
This is probably wayyyy out of the scope of what BIN is supposed to do, and obviously YMMV, but I’ve been more than satisfied with it.

Works well, smells aweful
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I used this primer in the closet where the previous owner's smell lingered even after it was painted. It seems it worked. We primed it with this then re-painted and the smell is gone. Now, this primer itself smells sooo bad, it is very strong, I had a simple respirator on and was still gauging, had to stop to take air a few times, as breathing under the respirator is not easy. If you plan on using this I suggest you invest in a good respirator. It dries very fast and primes well. Needs good mixing before the use.

AMAZING
We decided to paint our oak kitchen cabinets white. Started with more expensive sherwin williams primer and kept experiencing bleed through...after 3-4 coats, decided to do some more research and found this primer! I wish I would have found this in the beginning and would have saved myself a ton of time and money!!! This is worth every single penny!!! This is the first review I have ever written, that is how pleased I am with this stuff!

Covers well
I’ll see how it works. We bought a new home that appears to have has cats, we knew there had been dogs. The previous owner must have used a very effective deodorizing product as there was no evidence of cats when we did a walk through. After moving in and having the cArpet cleaned in the one carpeted room, everything seemed fine. A few days later, the cleaned carpet and a closet in the laundry room absolutely reeked. I primed the closet walls with this product and painted the baseboards and walls in in the closet with Zinsser sealing paint and scheduled carpet replacement. I’ll see how it does in a few days before moving on to more aggressive measures.

The absolute best for wood working
Tried this after getting poor results with water based primer on wood. I will never use water based primer again. This stuff levels out amazingly after brushing, and sands easily to a glassy smooth surface. Works amazing on plywood and mdf too. As with all paints/coatings, read how to clean it up on the back of the can. Make sure to get some denatured alchohol with it of your planning on reusing your paint brush. Do your lungs/brain a favor and wear a respirator when using this product.
