Workmate 425 review for craftwork
This is a solid, well made product for use by people doing jobs around the house. I don't think it is designed for commercial intensity. Instructions for putting the product together could be more clear with better diagrams. There seemed to be a strong interest in saving paper and ink. I used the picture on the box more than the instructions. Once together it all made sense. The Workmate is made of good quality laminated wood, plastic and metal. Some bigger people may find it a little short. I'm 5'7" and it works for me. It folds and stores well and would be easy to transport in a vehicle. I found cutting some wooden strips and using extra clamps completes the ability to hold work down. Overall I am glad I bought this product and will use it outside for doing dirty grinding, sanding and cutting jobs I don't want to do in my confined in house work space.

Bad service and product
Ordered this for Christmas for my husband. Parts are not missing but wrong.
Husband opened it up and took all parts out. Started to put together and the middle board is wrong. Holes are not placed correctly to be able to use the angle/cutting guide. It's printed on the wrong end OR the holes are drilled wrong.
Very disappointed. In recieving this in the condition it is in and now he won't even be able to use the Cutting guide. With having an injured back, it will be almost impossible to get everything back in a sack/vehicle to return to store.
Husband is the construction business and was looking forward to using this at home on personal projects.

Not the original!
I have the original workmate that's about 30 years old. This one is a pale, horrendous copy. The metal is thinner, feels wobbly, no solid feel like the old one. But worst is the clamping- The new unit uses plastic gearing and a toothed belt to ratchet the 2 handles- it fails constantly under any minimal load (tightening) which makes you feel like you are about to break the table.
Then there's the feet- they fall off after every use (folding and putting away), after repeadedly putting them back on, they have cracked and become useless. The old ones were more rubbery and never fell off.
This used to be a legendary product, but like most stuff in the corporate world, it has become a cheap imitation of it's former self.

Great portable work surface
I have 3 of these and just bought another for a fairly big project. These are really nice and can be confusing to the inexperienced user to the point where one may think they were shorted some parts or otherwise. One must read the instructions before assuming. The work table is tough and the other 3 have lasted for 6 years enduring professional as well as home use.

Not perfect, but great customer service from B&D
One of the bench top boards I received was warped. I contacted Black & Decker customer service and they replaced all three boards right away without any hassle. I have to commend the B&D folks because they were so easy to work with and stood behind their product. So far I like the work bench for my around the house projects and hobbyist woodworking. I think it is a good value for the price. I should mention that the instructions for both using the bench and assembling the workbench are pretty useless.

Handy
This little bugar has come in handy for working on projects. I have given this bench excellent on just about everything. However, putting it together did get a little hectic near the end. Aligning the 2 turn knobs put up a little fight, but if you are mechanically inclined then all obstacles are easy to conquer.

Not like they used to be
This version is not as stout as the older model from the 90's. All the sheet metal used is thinner, and the top wood surface is now made out of a bamboo wood product, which would be fine if it were as thick a surface as it used to be. I should have given it 3 stars, but, the product does function properly. And, save a star for good customer service. I received the product with one of the clamp dogs broken, and after a phone call to Black and Decker, received a bag of 2 for replacements. So, in this day and age of "shrink-flation", the Workmate is acceptable only because I'd have to look for a used one to get what I've grown accustomed to.

Not my old workmate.
Like many I have owned a workmate for thirty or more years and bought this one based on my experience with the older one. This unit is not much more than a glorified table in my opinion. The old unit had independent screw adjustments to lock down odd shapes. This unit has mirrored adjustments that keep it at straight angles. I do not care for that. When the table leg extensions are up it is far too short making it only useful in one position. If I had seen this assembled prior to purchase I would not have chosen this.
