It uses demand regeneration technology to regenerate only when you need it. A tank light makes it easy to monitor the salt level to know when it's time to add more. why this unit not working automatically since new ( works only on manual regeneration)
Mine took a very long time to do its first auto regeneration as well. I did call Whirlpool and we changed some settings over the phone. Now it's generating automatically every 3 weeks or so. I recommend calling them and reviewing your settings. These settings weren't in any manual that came with the softener.

My water is 28 grains of hardness and will this machine be adequate for my needs only 2 person household
Yes this softener will be able to handle 28 grains of hardness. You will definitely be using more salt to handle the hardness but really what it boils down is grain capacity. The rule of thumb to calculate softener capacity needs is take the hardness in your water (28 grains / gallon) and then multiply it by the # of gallons used by each person / day. Average is 70 gallons per person. Times this value by 2 since it is a two person household which results in 140 gallons / day of water usage. We multiply 28 grains of hardness x 140 gallons = 3920 grains of hardness / day. Typical water softener regeneration should occur no more than ever 4 days but no more than 14 days / regeneration cycle. This means we can take a 44,000 grain softener divide that by 3920 grains / day = 11.22 days for your home to use up the water softeners maximum capacity. That being said, a high efficiency softer will rarely run itself to max capacity and will likely regenerate sooner which means your softener will on average likely regenerate every week which is an ideal interval. Go with the WHSE44 model from Lowes and it will suit your needs perfectly without regenerating too often and wasting a lot of water and salt.

I have been using this for about 2 months now and the improvement in water quality is noticeable. It was easy to install and used much less salt than the old unit as it only regenerates after a certain volume of water has passed through.

Works great! Very quiet with lots of features.
This is a well-made product that seems to be doing the job. The improvement in the water softness was noticeable in about 24 hours and we had to turn down the hot water heater temperature. Dishes and laundry are coming out better and it looks way better than our old unit!
The salt usage has declined as the computer control delivers as promised. The regeneration cycles are shorter and less frequent as the volume is monitored.
This is a good product that is working great. Very happy with it.
