No, you can set shelves at desired heights when assembling unit, once assembled the shelves are stationary.

Rated 4 out of 5 by DMichele from Sturdy Once assembled, this is a really great system. My advice is to not assemble the support rods before installing the first shelf. Also, the plastic shelf brackets are a little tricky to get in place, they tend to slip down a notch when the shelf is installed above. Just make sure they are all level before proceeding to the next shelf.

It looks good and handles the weight of my microwave, slow cooker, coffee maker etc. without a problem. Nice and shiny. Love the fact that it's on wheels too. I actually enjoyed putting it together. It was easy.
