These filters are not what they used to be
I ordered four of these and I was disappointed that they didn't last as long as the last ones that I ordered. The other problem was the black material disintegrated into the tray. This has never happened in the past.

Same Problem with Mine
Ib ought these filters several months ago and had the same problem. They don't last as long and the black material came out of the filter into the bottom, almost making mud in my water. What's the point of using it? Won't buy them any more. Its a shame cause I love my humidifier.

Replacement for Holmes filters
I have just bought a filter made by Idylis for my Holmes 1850 humidifier. There are several Holmes models that it fits. This company also makes filters that fit other Holmes, Sunbeam, and Bionaire humidifiers. The outside mesh is metal. $10 at Lowe's Hardware. I have just started to use it.

short life span
I have experienced the same problem as the last reviewer. These filters do not last as long as the earlier ones offered. They fall apart more easily and then cleaning of the black plastic from the base unit is constant. Only filters available for my unit.

Bad Quality
I have been using my humidifier for years but the filters seem to be getting constantly worse. They get hard very quickly and I even flip them over quite often but nothing seems to extend their life. if I can't find a better filter soon it might be time to look for a different humidifier

Filters work fine for me
I have a few humidifiers made by Holmes. While there are other companies which make filters that fit my humidifiers, I find that I get the best results from the filters made by Holmes. Other filters seem to last a reasonably long time, in the sense that they do not fall apart. But after awhile they don't seem as successful at putting water into the air.
I'm sure that it matters what type of water you're using (soft vs hard, etc). But at least for me, these filters tend to last 2-3 months, so I use up two of them per humidifier per winter. My house is extremely dry in the winter (but then in the summer I need a dehumidifier!).

Use Bacteriostat and Water Treatment
I use my 2 mod. 1865 humidifiers year round..keep both water treatments 1/4 oz. each diluted in each full tank, swap ends of the filter/wick with each full tank. This allows my filter/wicks to last between 3-4 months. Yeah the black plastic does flake off a bit, but a small trade off for the comfort that the humidifiers provide. Holmes could however demand that the builders of the filters improve overall quality.

Wick Humidifier replacement filter
This works fine in my Humidifier, But wish it would last a little longer before it has to be replaced. It only lasted about a month and a half before it stopped absorbing the water.
