Description
Rainfresh water softener makes water soft by removing hardness using a process called Ion Exchange. Hardness-causing calcium and magnesium ions are replaced by an equivalent amount of sodium ions. Sodium ions do not form scale, thus making the water soft, while maintaining its chemical balance. By installing the high efficiency 2-tank water softener with 45,000 grain capacity and iron eliminator, your laundry comes out cleaner and softer, you get spotless glasses and dishes from your dishwasher, enjoy softer bouncier hair and smoother skin after showers and prevent scale build up in your bathroom and water heater. With Rainfresh water softeners you will enjoy soft water for years to come!

Why does this two tank system only remove 2 ppm of Iron when the Whirpool softener say that it removes 12 ppm? Please explain which is a better idea for iron in well water?
I'm not an expert but we have this system and we have heavy iron in our well water. I would not recommend this system as it does not remove the iron. If you boil a pot of water it still turns orange. Still have staining on plumbing fixtures as well.

Is it worthwhile to get a separate iron filter to filter the water before it gets to the softner? Is this a common practice? I've heard a softner won't last as long if your water has high iron content?
An iron removal unit must always be installed upstream (before) of the water softener.

Easy to Install, Works Well
Ultimately this softener is doing what we bought it to do - soften our hard well water. It was easy to install and seems to be working well. I'm not sure just how well the "iron remover" idea works as it seems to be just a bottle of resin cleaner added into the brine tank. If that's all it is, that is hardly work the extra cost. We probably should have just bought a regular softener and a separate iron filter.
There were some shipping problems. When received the shipment, the pallet have been torn off the box and had taken the bottom of the box with it. Perhaps I should have refused delivery for a mangled box, but the softener itself didn't seem to be damaged. That isn't the fault of Rainfresh or Lowes.

Works great!
My water is 4 grains per gallon of hardness, and after the iron filter, it is 0.3 mg/L of iron. Not a lot, but it made a huge impact on our pots and pans, and showers just didn't clean us very well. There were some iron stains on the bath and toilets.
After installing this product it has all be fixed! My wife is ecstatic, as am I. Bathing is even better with the remaining minerals. The water is as smooth as silk.
