Doesn't stop red squirrels or chipmunks
The little red squirrels laugh at this one, thye are not heavy enough to trigger the shield to drop in place. They a then chew out the plastic seed ports to make them bigger and the seeds easier to get at. Better to spend your money on a feeder with metal or one made of metal mesh that at least slows them down. The little Redpolls and Pine Siskins love this feeder, they sit and empty out all the seeds on to the ground in a matter of hours.

Good, could be great!
Bought this about 6 months ago. The squirrels had completely broken my two cylindrical plastic feeders, so this looked good. I filled it with peanuts and sunflower seeds, but now just use peanuts, as the chickadees were simply discarding the sunflower seeds. However, the guard continually got stuck. Took me quite awhile to realize one of the springs was missing. It also had an entire plastic port pushed into feeder when I got it, so I taped it up. The store is quite a ways away, so I just fixed it. But I feel it could be made better. I don't think mine came with instructions, as I have learned here I can open the bottom, and that there is a warranty!
It is a good feeder, in that grey squirrels haven't got a chance. Young red squirrels were not triggering the drop down cage, and chewed the ports.
My suggestion would be two fold.
a tag with minimal instructions as well as an insert.
Metal, i suggest some copper alloy to prevent bacteria and viruses( especially with avian flu scares) around the ports to prevent squirrel chewing.
Maybe, and extra spring!!.
I used elastic cord to make up for a lost spring.. so far so good. But I'd love a real spring.
I'm.planning on buying another one, so I can fill both and be able to travel, but still leave treats for my buddys.
I would recommend this feeder highly, but just make sure it is intact before buying. Its hard to tell unless you know how it works.

Waste of money
I bought this feeder a month ago and within that amount of time the feeder let in so much monster the food caked in the bottom and started molding. There isn't a way to open it for cleaning amd the food is stuck inside it, so it can't be used anymore. Do not recommend.

it worked for a while
the feeder worked for a while until the tree rats found they could bend the leaves that cover the feeder ports and they can then get to the food.although it is difficult for them i’m sure in time they will damage the leaves too much then get to the feed easier
