Solid Construction - Elegant appearance
I purchased these handrail brackets to replace a set of brackets similar in appearance.
The previous set were almost visually identical, but were hollow and had only one screw hole to attach to the wall. Within a year, they had bent – which is why I ordered these.
CONSTRUCTION:
These brackets (Chrome Nystrom 22820's) are a heavy solid metal construction. They feature three screw holes, for an extremely firm attachment to the wall. The base, stem, and top cap, are all solid metal (not like my last ones) and very sturdy.
INSTALLATION:
If you are attaching these to drywall, obviously locate the wood stud behind the drywall and drill into that. PRO TIP: Because theses generally get installed at a 45 degree angle for staircases, that means you are only going to be able line up two of your screw holes with the center of the stud (which is still pretty solid on their own - see photo). If you want to take advantage of the third screw hole, install a steel drywall anchor to screw into.
COST:
At about $12 CAD per bracket, these are on the pricier end of the off-the-shelf solutions. Given I needed these for both stairwells, I was looking at over $100 for just handrail brackets – which is my one complaint regarding these. However given my recent experience with cheap handrail brackets, I strongly recommend that these, as they are well worth the money.

Solid Product
I installed the brackets for a new maple handrail down the basement stairs. They have very little flex and seem quite strong. The two different sets of screws are a large size. #10's and #12's I believe. (I pre-drilled holes into the handrail, a must if it's a hardwood.)

Extra two holes helps connection to the wall helps
I bought this a month ago and installed it. The extra holes on the round part which is attached to the wall is a tremendous help to get a solid hold.
