Can these be cut down shorter?
yes, I had three cut down. Had to find a steel fabricator willing to do it (a small job). The tube is thick and both top and bottom plates "rest" on the posts - they are not fastened to the post. So it's important that if you cut the post, that it's a square cut - in order for the plates to rest squarely on the post. The weight of the structure pressing onto the top plate and bottom plate is what keeps it all together. Both plates have ridges to line up the post, but again, they are not fastened together- its all held together by weight.. So have a professional cut them down who can guarantee a square cut.

I see no difference in the weight bearing capability of your 2 3/4" steel posts and your Type 2 heavy duty steel posts. I.e.; maximum load of 16 foot beam and 50 lbs per square foot.
