Best for plaster over lath walls and ceilings
The only type that will work well with the older construction that used plaster over laths, generally houses built before the 1960's, even with 1" of plaster. Basically, it is just a very strong magnet that is suspended in the plastic unit so it moves freely. When you pass it over a steel nail head under the plaster it is attracted to it so moves accordingly as you move the unit. That is your stud, since the laths are nailed to it. It will also find steel sheet rock screws, but those are more tedious to find because there are not many of them in comparison to lath nails, and are usually spaced a good foot apart on the studs.

Nice if you can find a screw
It works great if you happen to find a nail or screw. You might find it will take a while till you find one, but when you do the little prong pops up no problem.

Simple device detecting nails easily enough in most walls, but not all, for only 10$ install very good serious ultrasonic device: 80$ and more
