The S170 lawn tractor is the premium 48-inch deck model of John Deere's 100 series. The 24 HP ELS® V-twin engine has plenty of power to handle tough mulching, mowing and bagging conditions with coverage up to 2 acres. The S170 features a heavy-duty hydrostatic transmission, side-by-side foot pedals, enhanced styling, adjustable controls, 15-in seat with lumbar adjustment, cruise control, easy-read fuel gauge, front bumper, larger front/rear wheels and tires, premium steering wheel and fender flares. The 48-inch 3-blade Edge(TM) cutting system with electric blade engagement offers superior cut quality and can be easily equipped to bag or mulch. It provides even cuts with 1-in to 4-in cut height selections (1/4-in increments). Plus, this lawn tractor also includes the Easy Change(TM) 30-second oil change system. Is this all wheel drive? How will it perform in snow going uphill ?
Thank you for visiting the Lowe's website. The S140 Lawn Tractor is equipped with two-wheel drive. It is recommended to never mow or operate ride-on mower on slope angles greater than 13° with the lawn ride-on mower in its basic configuration (without attachments). When using attachments it is recommended to never mow or operate on slope angles over 10°. You can find detailed instructions under "Section 10 - Safety - Operating On Slopes" in the Operator's Manual.

Do I need any other attachments with John Deere S170 for the below collector bins? Article #44725013 Item #000477236 Model #BUC10286 the rep in the Rona store was not able provide info. Is there a step by step diagram for how the bins will attach to S170.

Is the transmission case made of plastic or metal and is it serviceable.

What is the dimensions of this? I want to pickup with my utility trailer but I’m not sure if it will fit in
I have a 5'x10' . ( 60" x 120" ) trailer with a ramp that I plan on picking mine up in the New Year. I'm sure it will fit in mine. I also imagine that the deflector can be completely remove.

The unit looks and feels like a well built machine. If you buy it, be careful to prep it yourself. The PDI Lowes had done wasn't thorough or complete. Check your air tire air pressure - mine was way off. Also the mower deck needed to be levelled because it wasn't even close. You Tube had a good video on how to level it, and it was very easy. I assumed when I had to wait for the PDI to be completed, it would be ready to go but this is not the case. Check it prior to the first cut

Fast comfortable and precise cut
Amazing smooth fast ride. Definitely check tire pressure and oil level. 48 inch leveling of blade take some finesse but make sure the front is 1/8 to 1/4 lower then the side. Scalping wheels setting take some reading of the manual as they are not marked on the deck. I can mow my whole lawn in 7-10 minutes instead of 45 and enjoy doing it. Thanks John D

Love my new Deere. Works great. Just strange that the smaller model s130 comes with a cover for the glove box and the s140 does not?? I will contact JD about that.

Transmission broken 3 weeks in
On the 3rd cut the transmission failed. It just won't move. The pin is in, the engine runs and the brake is off. It just won't move. Very upsetting to spend $3000 and have this happen in the first month.

Nothing Like My Lexus from
Dissappointed
I bought this machine in July thinking it was of high quality. Hmmmm. It is mediocre at best. After only 36 hours of operation as indicated on the hour meter, it appears as thought the PTO Drive belt is slipping. Somewhere around the deck there is a rattle. I can't figure out where the noise is coming from. There are other rattles as well leading me to believe something else is not right. I do not know if these issues are under warranty. I have to pay to transport the machine to dealer at quite a cost just to find out. Ughhh! I shouldn't have to do that after only 36 hours. Also, the zerk fittings for the spindles are so awkwardly situated, I have to wonder who is responsible for their design. It would make more sense if all of the zerk fittings pointed outward for easy access. All this from a three thousand dollar machine. I did not expect this. I think this machine is not durable. From someone who has bought the machine and tested it so that you do not have to, I recommend you spend your money on a different brand.
