JD 130 pound Spreader
Have only used twice to spread grass seed and the spreader worked well. As commented by other reviewers - the spreader tips forward hooked to my D140 JD Mower so the last little bit of seed slides forward and not out the shoot. I fabricated a spacer block out of 1.25" square wood piece (8" long) and flipped the bolt on tractor hitch to the bottom and this raised the spreader to almost level. This helped with the seed distribution the second day but could still be raised higher still. The suggestion to wax the inside of hopper is also a good one and I will do that before spreading fertilizer in last Fall.

I Expect More From John Deere
Worked well for two years, and then I had to repair a loose gear inside the gear box. By year three, friction wear destroyed the gear and shaft alignments so that the spinner would randomly disengage. It then failed to broadcast the fertilizer, leaving paths of burnt dead grass where it simply poured out of the hopper. I disassembled the gear box again, and saw that too many parts, both inside the gear box and outside where the shaft runs through the hopper had worn too far to bother fixing. Broke in three years, but the spreader is only used about 4 hours a year. So figure about 12-15 hours of useable life.

Generally very good with two minor flaws
Recently replaced my old JD spreader due to age and rust. This model is much better constructed with a much better/heavier chute operating system. Spreads very well and have no problems reaching the handle from my JD285 tractor seat.
First little problem is that the adjustment setting can move in use as the control arm is cycled back and forth from operate to off. The solution is to put an external lock washer on the short carriage bolt underneath the setting scale. Now the setting stays put without moving.
The second issue, which has been mentioned many times in these reviews, is that the unit is not level when attached and so several cups of material remain in the forward bottom of the hopper when the drop chute is exposed. My solution was to raise the attachment point about 4" on a piece of 5/8 threaded rod (see photo).

John Deere Quality
John Deere means quality and this is no exception. Excellent build instructions online video or adobe. I didn't time the build, but it only felt like an hour.
The big hopper holds enough to do my acre lawn. It is solid & pulls great loaded or empty. My old spreader finally rusted away after over 20 years. It had to be pulled really slow or it would bounce & drag and not broadcast like it should. The Deere pulls great even empty and at top speed (which is the break-neck speed of 7mph on my 325). The hopper needs a little help emptying.
My wife paid $200 for this as a birthday present for me. A little pricey, but the reviews were all great and it is more stout than the Agri-Fab version (Agri-fab builds this for JD).

Doesn't spread evenly
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This pull behind is very well built and would be a great product if it had the ability to spread product evenly. The problem is with the vertical bars that hold the hopper in place. As the material is being slung out it hits the two vertical bars causing the materal do be concentrated in the center of the spread.Even in the demo video you can see this happening and the heavy density in the center rather than a even distribution. Most other spreaders these bars that hold the hopper are curved back towards the front to keep this from happening. Also the hopper is designed such as the material doesn't empty out.
Took mine back and would not recommend due to design problems.

JD broadcast spreader
This was a great purchase. It took me about 50 minutes to put together. Don't follow the directions about just hand tightening the nuts. Snug them down enough to help hold it together throughout the assembly. Great product and works great. Just a hint, to help the tub empty easier and make for easier cleaning I waxed the inside of the tub. Have no problem with the fertilizer completely emptying out.

Fast work spreader
Bought this to pull behind a D170 rider to cover a 2 acre lawn. This is the ticket for large lawns! Made the work fast and easy. Just remember to look back now and again to make sure the fertilizer is flowing through the feed chute. As you get closer to empty, you may have to reach back to get the remaining fertilizer flowing down into the feed chute. I did.
It went together fast, and the instruction s were easy to follow. Well made product.

Good, but needs redesigned hopper.
This is a good fertilizer spreader, and I am mostly pleased with its features. However, I did encounter three issues while using it the first time. (1) The hopper does not completely empty its contents. This could be solved by redesigning the floor of the hopper and giving it a steeper angle so the fertilizer pellets more easily slide down to the opening. (2) It is impossible to see inside the hopper from the driver's seat of my John Deere EZTrak mower to check the amount of fertilizer left in the hopper. I have to stop the mower and get off to look in the hopper. (3) You cannot reach the shut off lever from the driver's seat to stop the flow of fertilizer when you stop the mower. You have to get off the mower to move the lever. This allows the fertilizer to continue to flow which wastes product by leaving small piles of fertilizer on the grass. The grass is burned by the excess fertilizer.
