Terrible filter
Cheaply made filters. I've been buying this line of filters for years and these are absolutely ridiculously thin and flimsy; toilet paper thin and should be used as such.

Good Value - Too much Cardboard
I just picked up an order of 12 filters: 12" X 36" Basic MERV 5.
I have not used them yet - but, when I do I'll write another review.
The picture on the retailer's website showed the Filtrete filters with no cardboard covering the front.
What I picked up, had lots of cardboard covering up the front. You would have to think that if 30% of the front of the filter is covered with cardboard that would not be a good thing.
I'll try to add a photo - but that function is greyed out. Maybe it will let me add a photo after I click on the "Complete" button?

Design is Questionable
Major concern with mesh/plastic on opposite side of air flow. Concern with fibers going into furnace.

Flimsy new design
I have been using filtrate filters for years. The new design is getting sucked in to my energy efficient furnace. Does not happen in the regular furnace. There is not enough support for the filter. They need to go back to the old design. I will have to look into a different brand

Flimsy beveled edge, won't buy again.
VERY disappointed with the new flimsy beveled edge design. Filters can distort in the filter duct and may get sucked into the fan. Sorry I bought a bulk pack and will not buy this product again. Unless Filtrete changes back to a sturdy box construction. Will use other brands with box frame from now on.

New design is awful
I used to really like the Filtrete basic filters. The ones that had a full box (not tapered) cardboard frame, with the metal wiring in a criss-cross pattern across the back. They were sturdy and held together well over 3 months of use. With the full box frame, they also fit tightly in my vent grills, which was especially important for my upstairs ones in the ceiling.
They new design has a tapered frame and got rid of the wire mesh support and now uses a flimsy plastic support that is on the front-facing side -- NOT on the back facing the furnace, where the support should be in order to keep pieces of filter material from flowing into the furnace. Another problem with the new design is the plastic support material creates a super annoying whistling sound in some of my air intake vents.
If 3M does not go back to the former design and quality, I will be finding a new brand of filter to use in my home and all of my rental properties.

BAD DESIGN
I bought two of these about Lamont ago so I would have them on hand and ready to go. Just got them out and noticed the air flow arrow. Others have commented it looks like it's going the wrong way. The other problem is because the cardboard frame is beveled or slanting out it does not go in the furnace easily and i think it would kink if forced. I am not going to take the chance of installing these and have one sucked into my fan. Money wasted and I won't buy again. I hope no one lost their job because of the air flow. Maybe they are working from home and are making them on the kitchen table. Seriously 3M should change back.

new design
I do not like the new design of the 1085 filter that I bought today. It had a cardboard support across the back of the filter that is very flimsy and certainly will do nothing to prevent the filter from bending inward due to air intake from the heater. It may even rip and bits may get sucked into my heater. No thanks. I returned it. Thank goodness there were a few of the old style still in the store so I bought them. Please go back to the previous style without those cardboard supports.
