Does easy heat make a de-icing cable I can use on a metal roof?

Asked by: Ken6
These cables are for metal gutters and downspouts so should work on metal roof. But the clips that fasten to asphalt shingles might not hold to metal?

What is the life expectancy of de-icing cables?

  • QUESTIONS, PRODUCT
Roof deicing cable - 120' - 600w is rated 3.6 out of 5 by 13.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Prevention of Ice Dams During the December 2010 snowstorm, had bad leaking into one of my bedrooms where the roof above was especially flat (only 2" pitch on 12"). Ice dams had formed in gutter and probably front of roof overhang and the roof was covered with ice going 8 feet back. Once things cleared up, I hooked up wire both through gutter and up and down first two feet of the roof and it seems that it has completely solved the problem, at least through these next two snow storms which were just as bad or maybe even this latest one with the rain was even worse when it comes to this problem. The wire basically kept the top half of the gutter and the front of roof clear and allowed any melting snow/water to run off as opposed to backing up and eventually getting under shingles. You really need to give layout of wire a lot of thought, because you may have to double up the run at times and you really to think about where you are going to plug it in and choose a logical starting point. I did this but still plan on rerouting once things clear up again (if that ever happens). I would assume for any given say 30 foot section of gutter and roof, it's a two hour job and if you are working on a ladder in a two story situation, maybe even longer (I was standing on my first story roof and was able to reach to the second story with just a short ladder so it wasn't as difficult and no danger). I also bought the Easy Heat automatic on/off sensor, but didn't install that yet, because I wanted to know for sure whether cable would work, without bringing the sensor into the equation, so I can't comment on that aspect yet and I have been very conservative and basically left the cable plugged in for a week to 10 days at a time, but I didn't want to take any chances. This is a frustrating problem, but this product will most likely solve the problem if you follow the instructions and think it through.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This Solved My Ice Damming Problem Our two car garage projects out about ten feet from the front of our house. There's a shed style roof above this projection. The heat from our cars and radiated heat from the second floor of our house warms the underside of the shed roof. The snow melts, runs down the roof and then freezes when it hits the eave overhang. Aggravating the situation is that this is on the north side of our house shaded from sunlight most of the time in winter. This is a classc ice dam situation. The gutter over our garage door would fill with ice until it was one to two inches above the top of the gutter! Icicles galore would hang from our gutter. The ice would back up under the shingles. Lucikly we never leaking to the inside of our garage. We just had a new roof put on our house in November and decided it was time to do something about our ice damming problem. We considered creating an attic beneath this shed roof but the vents would have been plainly visible on the front of our house. So that was out. Electric heat de-icing was plan B. I bought one of those pipe warming cables and taped it to the bottom of the gutter. The temps finally warmed into the 50s hitting the low 60s one weekend. Yes, it gets that warm in northern Colorado in the winter! I was able to clear the gutter of the remaining ice in preparation for installing this product. Since the roof line was just above our garage door it was an easy reach standing on a six foot step ladder. The EasyHeat cable was easy to install. The cable was suprisingly flexible even in the 40 degree weather the day I installed it. The product instructions were clear and concise. A couple of key points are that you should visit the Emerson EasyHeat Web site and download their planning guide to deteremine what length cable you need. This process seems to estimate high, so you might find yourself with more cable than you need. Something we did that really helped was to plan our installation on paper before doing the actual install. This told us where to put the clips and that we had enough extra cable to make the recommend "down and back up" run in the downspout. Then it was a simple matter of measuring and marking with chalk on the roof shingles, installing the clips and then installing the cable. The toughest part was getting the cable down the downspout. I had to use an electriciands fish tape for that. I also bought the RS2 automatic control but I have to wait for an extended warm-up in the weather to get that done. In the meantime I just plug it in when needed.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Roof Heat Cable The Easy heat cable was easy to work with and came with plenty of clips for my application length. After using it for a couple of weeks, it has done a good job of preventing ice dams and keeping the snow and ice off the edge of the roof and gutters. I would give it 5 stars for performance but only 4 stars because of the cost.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Melts snow/ice, but will also ruin roof This would work if you had ample space 2 mount it and some sort of different wire security system. However, be prepared to destroy shingles or some of your roofing material if you follow the instructions. The clips are very evasive and I did not want to risk ruining my roof for a heating kit. Ended up just laying the wire up there and then took it down after a few weeks and returned it because no way to secure it without destroying my roof. Definitely not worth the aggravation. The wire does get nice and warm. So if you're working on a cold day, plug it in while you're working with it to keep your hands warm

Rated 1 out of 5 by from terrible product I purchase this heat cable to put in my attic to keep the snow from piling up I did not attach outside just inside with tape alien tape an innocuous non toxic tape not to damage the coil and in the spring when i checked after I unplugged it I noticed the damage no one all winter touched the coil...the worst part came later with the company I tried to return said item to Rona in Dutton but they said i had to contact the company and ever since I did I have been getting the run around I sent pics these ones and the receipt that said I purchased the coil in January but the company does not want to honour any return policy or refund my money...bad company, stay away from this product save your money.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Total disappointment We used almost 500' installing it with the correct thermostat. During our tryout on our first snow, on 1/21/12, it melted about 1/2" around the coil in all locations, and that was it over 24 hours. It took many hours to install and obviously we can't return it. We have a severe ice dam situation and had hoped this would be the solution. A complete waste of time and money.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Gutter warming cable These cables have saved me from endless hours of clearing ice from my gutters. I now have started installing them in my Mother's gutters as well. This one is the third cable I've installed. Last year I needed to solve an ice issue in my 2nd story gutters. Not knowing the proper procedure, the 1st was Most difficukt because there were NO instructions in the package so it took me almost 4 hours as it tskes multiple sets of hands to work the cables ip the downspouts and ghru the getters. Now having done 2 last year, this one was easier because i set 3 ladders. Using a 5 gallon bucket and an engineer's hammer i set the spool of wire inside the bucket using the hammer as a spindle the wire was less lijely to tangle. If One desires to do it themselves I would use the linear feet of the gutter and downspouts, then doublevthe measurement to insure having enough to do the first 2 shingles as well. After installation is complete, just plug them into the socket as needed. Remember to unplug when deicing is complete so the GFI receptacles don't malfunction. I highly recommend these as the money spent, although very pricey, is better than having to deice thd gutters by hand. Its MUCH safer with the cables as well. Good luck.
