Not for hardened steel
This bit works well for mild steel but will not touch hardened steel after the “pilot” tip cuts in. The pilot tip cuts it like butter, but once the shoulders of the bit hits the steel it’s done. It’s a shame, if the whole cutting edge were made of the same material or same geometry the pilot tip is made up of, this would be a great bit.

Doesn't Work for Tempered Steel
Tried to use this drill bit to open up a hole in a saw blade for mounting purposes. Even though the package said it was designed to be used on stainless steel, the drill bit didn't even get through one hole without significant bit damage. Had to return it but fortunately Lowe's graciously accepted the return with no questions beyond my explanation. May work well for wood products but that's not why I paid the premium for this bit.

Package is misleading
Package indicates drill can be used for iron. It would not make a hole in iron. It was a waste of money.

Really good
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] These drill bits are the only drill bits that i have found to drill holes in quality steel. Of course, they do wear out, but their usefulness life far exceeds any other bits. I will keep buying these bits exclusively when I need to drill holes in metal.

Low wear, fast cutting
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Bought this drill bit after burning our two on hard steel in just 2 holes. One of these allowed me to finish 4 more hole and the bit still has life left in it. I was surprised. Advertised at 4X life of other quality bits. It is every bit of that for a 5% higher price.

Worthless on 1/8 Stainless Steel
Went through 4 of these bits attempting to bore through 1/8 SS, the "pilot tip" is extremely hard to keep cool. Went out and purchased 4 Milwaukee helix and, using the same cooling (oil) that I used with the Dewalt bits, I was able to drill fast and three times as many holes.
They probable work great on Pine.

Won't go threw SS Shelf Bracket
Burned through two of these drilling holes in a stainless steel shelf bracket. Bracket was maybe 1mm thick. Got maybe 6 holes out of one bit and one out of the other. Very disappointed.

Very good drill bit
De Walt is not my favorite brand, but this is a very good bit. Cobalt is much stronger than HSS. It works well on most materials. I especially like the De Walt starter tip. It does not skate on the material. Cobalt costs more than HSS, but it is worth it..
