Description

This General Contour Guide Tool makes carpet and linoleum installation, woodworking projects and other applications requiring contour duplication easier. The contour gage features stainless steel pins that slide, allowing it to conform to irregular surfaces. Use this guide for a convenient way to make patters, molds, prototypes, and to mark guidelines.

Rated 5 out of 5 by RDRR from I can measure around corners I was trying to measure around a musket barrel to cut openings In a supporting cross piece in a wooden rifle box used to transport the musket to Civil War reenactments. I wanted a snug fit and couldn't figure out how to actually measure around the barrel and around the stock to get that snug fit. This contour gauge lets me mark off the exact size so the openings are perfectly custom made for each rifle. I like it. It works. I wish the end wires were stiffer so they would help hold the shape too.. The best way I've come up with for customizing fits around hard to measure objects.

I needed to fit the bottom of a baseboard over a threshold with a change in floor elevation and have it fit as snug as possible. In the old days I would have cut a template out of cardboard, being successful only after several tries. This contour gauge saved me a lot of time and worked better than I expected. Ihe "fingers" are very tight which make it hold its shape once formed so you can carry it without the worry of it changing shape.

Rated 4 out of 5 by Chuck from A good tool at the price, if you understand it. I bought the contour gauge to use in certain phases of violin making, and it has lived up to my expectations. A buyer should understand several things about how the tool works, and what its limitations are. The pins that slide through the bar are about 1/2 millimeter in diameter, so that (plus the user's skill) sets its margin of error. Things to remember include: 1. The width of the object you're measuring can be over-estimated by one to two pin-diameters, depending on the object's shape, and the placement of the gauge. 2. The outline of the object you're measuring will be stair-stepped (especially on the sides), since only the nearest corner of a pin touches any object that is not perpendicular to the pin. So if you're tracing around the outline, you have to use the most conservative possible interpretation of the shape. 3. If the pins were smaller, they would be more likely to bend out of shape, either distorting the contour or damaging the pins. Or both. 4. Finally, both the harmonica-like bar and the pins that slide through it are attracted by a magnet, so an occasional gentle wiping with light oil might extend the tool's useful lifespan. One improvement I'd like to see would be a sliding wedge that would temporarily lock the pins in place once the measurement is taken. Overall, if you can live with these limitations, it's a good tool, especially at the price.

Rated 3 out of 5 by Scott from Needs HD For copying crown and similar trim, there isn't high enough detail to make this worth it. It'll get the approximate shape, but not enough detail to determine an ogee from and ogee and a fillet... which is why one would need this. Eyeballing the trim and sketching it on a piece of paper would accomplish more than this would get you. There also isn't a way to lock the pins in place once you have the general shape you want, so should it be accidentally bumped on the way to the trim department, you just lost your profile.

Rated 4 out of 5 by Rob from Stainless Steel Contour-Gauge [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] It seems to be a good product. I noticed the brassy metal end caps are pressed on vs. fasteners. It would be great to be able to increase the friction of the pins when they become loosened and not able to hold contour shapes. I would not place is a storage container or tool bag with heavier or odd shaped items be placed on top. I believe the contour fingers would bend if the item was of substantial weight. I look forward to using it more regularly

The pins will overlap or spread and will not stay aligned, preventing an accurate measurement. Never thought I'd ever say this about anything but the plastic version of this tool works much better.

Rated 4 out of 5 by D1mndal from Great tool if you know how to use it This is a good tool for tile work as well as other jobs if you want to replicate the shape of moldings or find the profile of something. I have used it for guitar profiles as well as moldings.
