Water-based Stain (125)
Water-based stains provide wood with a rich appearance and deep colour. They help bring out the natural shade of the material, or turn it a different hue. With dozens of water-based wood stains to choose from, you can get the look that’s just right for every project.
This finish is easy to apply, either with a rag or a brush. Using a rag eliminates any brush marks left over after drying, while a brush coats a larger area quickly. Water-based stains have a faster drying time than oil or gel stains, which reduces the time you have to work with the colour. It gives you the added benefit of being able to apply more coats in less time.
The colour from a water-based wood stain highlights the existing wood grain for a more natural appearance. You can put it on over a previous application of oil-based stains with minimal sanding and stripping, making it ideal for restoration projects. Water-based stains are available in multiple finishes, from a lower sheen to glossy. The higher the sheen the more waterproof and easier to clean the final piece becomes. Matte finishes trade off some durability to give wood a more natural appearance.
Most water-based stains are suitable for trim, furniture, carvings and other projects. If you plan to stain your floor, you need to use a coating specifically designated for them. This is because by default indoor wood stains aren’t rated to hold up to foot traffic. Floor stains also come in gallon-sized cans, allowing you to cover a larger surface with just one container.
If you’re restoring just part of a piece, such as a single chair leg, you can mix multiple colours together to get a custom shade. This allows you to put down colour that’s more consistent with the rest of the wood. There are scores of shades from which to choose, which allows for more precise water-based stain colour matching.
