How does one fill the reservoir once the plants have been planted?
It fills itself with rain water. If you feel the soul is dry, you can water as you would in a normal pot.

I am thinking to buy these to grow a couple tomato plants. Do I need to drill any holes in the bottom?
Hi there!
Tomato plants would do wonderfully in this planter! There is a pre-drilled drainage hole in the side of the planter which will allow the reservoir in the base to hold water in order to provide a self watering effect. Any water that the reservoir cannot hold, would drain out the drainage hole in the side to prevent over-saturation. Drainage holes can be drilled in the bottom if desired, but this would eliminate the self watering feature.

How many bags of potting soil do you need to fill this planter? Do you need to drill any holes in it? Thanks
We didn’t drill any holes and never had water pooling on top of the soil. I filled it with herbs on my back deck and they grew like crazy. The bottom is the water reservoir so it’s not full of soil top to bottom. I think we put in two bag of soil, then the soil with the plant pots that we used filled it.

I am thinking to plant 2 cedars and leave it outside for the winter. Will this planter be sturdy enough to go through the cold and freezing Toronto Winter without cracking? Is there any hole at the bottom that I can release the water after heavy rain?
The planter is very sturdy and holds it's own water resovoir. Will make it through our cold winters no problem. I filled the bottom of the planter with garden rocks just enough to cover the water line. If water builds beyond the water line there is a small hole at that level to drain excess.In addition you can opt to drill a small hole on the side of the planter to release water that may fill beyond the threshold (instructions on how to do this is included with the planter). I would advise on using dwarf cedars if planting both in one planter. Plants grow amazing in these planters and don't require much watering.

Great Outdoor Planter
