ok...so the advert clearly states no underlay is required.. then in red, at the bottom..it states to use a specific underlay..whats the real deal?

Asked by: justme2018
Ice and water shield at the eaves (extending over the transition from heated to unheated attic space), under valleys and around chimneys & skylights is a must for my jobs. Underlayment increases the service life of the roof but becomes less vital the steeper the pitch. It's not "required" by the building code for any roof with a decent slope, but is definitely worth the time and effort to put down.

Marathon 25 AR. Shingles. Does the 25 mean 25 year shingles

Asked by: BR1606
That is what they want us to think. In truth, when you read the fine print on the package, 25 year warranty applies only when installed at a certain angle (roof pitch) that you don't commonly find on most houses built in the 70's 80's 90's. The real warranty period varies dependent on roof pitch and whether installation was done by a professional, etc.

"Marathon 25" Roofing Shingles - 32.3 sq. ft. - Harvard Slate is rated 2.4 out of 5 by 8.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from No problems so far I used this product two years ago to do most of the front of my house and last year to do part of the back as well as the shed. Everything went well and I have not had any of the problems the other reviewers mention. I used 6x 1.5" in each shingle, even though instructions said 4 nails would be enough. We had some very strong winds over the last year and nothing lifted at all. It is worth noting that I manually hammered in each nail. I have seen videos where one worker is using a pneumatic roofing nailer and then a second guy follows him to tap down the nails with normal hammer. This kind of signaled to me that perhaps using a roofing nailer alone might not be sufficient.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from These shingles will not last! The previous owner of my house installed IKO 3-Tab shingles back in 2008 so this year they were 10 years old. Well during the May 4th wind storm in Toronto I had significantly areas of shingles ripped off the west facing slope of my roof by the wind. While ripping the rest off to re-shingle that section of roof it was pretty evident what was wrong. The clear plastic release strip that is supposed to dissolve to bond the shingles together on the roof simply didn't, you could lift up each shingle with no effort whatsoever. Buy anything but this brand, they will not last.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Buy anything else Keep peeling off. Product was put on by professionals, and has to be replaced twice a year. Used for Garage not knowing it was IKO. When getting house shingled by a reputable company, had to wait for them to take care of IKO warranty replacement elsewhere. When there is a known defective product it should be removed from the market instead of continuing to sell - only positive is I can match up until I can afford to remove and replace.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poor shingles. Poor warranty. These shingles are rated at 110mph. Wind gusts of 64 mph blew them off at least 12 homes in our community. Warranty only covers up to 60mph. Do not use.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not good Worst shingle I ever used. Bought 30 bundles to do my house, ever bundle the tar strip was stuck to the next shingle had to use a putty knife to spread them apart and none of the tar on the front of the shingle was in the same place. A few bundles the tar was at least a good half inch different then the next but in the end they all did line up but still a day job ended up to be a 4 day job. I would never buy these again
