Please explain the length dimension for a 2 1/2" diameter gear clamp. 3 1/2" or 4" length?

Because clamps are adjustable, the precise length of a clamp is not the key factor to look at when you are trying to pick one that fits a particular hose diameter. The important thing is to look at the recommended size range of the clamp, and make sure the hose diameter is in this range. Clamps are commonly classified using the number system of the American Society of Engineers (SAE), and these are on the packaging at Lowe’s. An SAE #32 clamp (Lowe’s part 276551) is suitable for hoses with a diameter between 1 9/16” and 2 ½.
