Heavy-duty cables are ideal when you need to tie down or lift heavy loads. Often made from braided galvanized steel, many models come with a thin PVC coating or a chromate finish to prevent corrosion of the metal. They commonly come in thicknesses of 1/16" and 1/8". They are rated based on a minimum breaking strength, which is a force that is significantly less than the weight required to make the cable fail or yield. Thicker wires are stronger, and thus have greater minimum breaking strength, making them ideal for lifting large loads in industrial and farm settings. Thinner cables are more flexible and suited to lighter loads and home applications. Twines made from natural fibres, like jute and sisal, are ideal for packaging, gardening, and other uses that don’t require great strength. They are economical, UV-resistant, easy to handle, and biodegradable.
Metal chains are ideal for hanging plants, lights, and other fixtures around the house. While they’re offered in rolls up to 200 feet long, they can also be purchased by the foot to meet your personal needs. Machine chain has short links and is perfect for applications where flexibility is needed in a compact length. Coil chains have longer links and are ideal for barriers and platforms. Look for carbon steel options that provide extra durability, and which are made for heavy-duty tasks like lifting engine blocks.
