What is the Canada Greener Homes grant?
The Canada Greener Homes Grant helps homeowners who want more energy efficient homes. The program offers the opportunity to receive up to $5,600 in total to enable homeowners to perform energy efficient work in their homes in addition to EnerGuide assessments and expert advice with their renovation planning.
For owners in Quebec, it will be necessary to register for the Rénoclimat program to benefit from this grant. The grant by Rénoclimat will be adjusted according to the work carried out by each participant and according to the amount from the federal program. It should be noted that the amounts of the two grants are not cumulative for the same action. Participants in the Rénoclimat program who received an evaluation before the grant was announced could still benefit from the federal grant for eligible work carried out since December 1, 2020. Services Canada will take care of communicating with these owners to inform them of the procedure to follow.

How the government grant process works?
Step 1: Find out about the government grant
Who is eligible for this grant?
Eligible homeowners in Canada regardless of where they live, can take part in this program. Only one homeowner per home can register. Amongst other things, you will be required to provide proof of ownership with your property tax invoice number (this number can be found on your municipal property documents) and demonstrate that the property is your primary residence. This can be done through either a driver's license or government issued ID with address.
Property types that may be eligible:
• Single and semi-detached houses
• Row housing
• Townhomes
• All-season cottages
• Mobile homes on a permanent foundation
• Permanently-moored floating homes
• Mixed use buildings (residential portion only)
• Small multi-unit residential building of three storeys or less with a footprint of 600 m2 or less
Examples of non-eligible property types:
• New homes
• Multi-unit residential buildings that are over three storeys or over 600 m2 in footprint
Step 2: Register and book your home renovation evaluation
This evaluation is required before you undertake your renovations and needs to be performed by an NRCan registered energy advisor. To participate, you must apply online through the Greener Homes program.
If you had an EnerGuide evaluation done on your home before April 1, 2020 - you will need a new one.
If the EnerGuide evaluation on your home was done between April 1, 2020, and November 30, 2020 - you can use your evaluation for the program, but you won’t be reimbursed for it. To be eligible, your home renovations must have been completed on or after December 1, 2020 and be both eligible and recommend by an energy advisor in their report.
If the EnerGuide evaluation on your home was done after Dec 1, 2020 - you can be reimbursed for both your evaluations and your renovations if you complete at least one retrofit that is both eligible and recommended by your energy advisor in his report.
Costs of your home evaluations
The prices may vary across Canada and are dependent on factors like the location and the size of your house. The maximum total reimbursement amount is $600 for the two evaluations. Therefore, the reimbursement may not cover the full cost of these evaluations.
Specific instructions by province
Residents of Quebec need to apply directly through the Rénoclimat program. The financial assistance offered by the Rénoclimat program will be adjusted for each participant according to the work carried out and the amount offered by the federal program. The two financial assistance amounts are not cumulative inside the same measure.
Rénoclimat program participants who received an evaluation before May 27, 2021, may be eligible for the federal program for eligible work carried out since December 1, 2020. Services Canada will contact eligible participants to inform them of the procedure to follow.
The greener homes grant is available in Nova-Scotia and New-Brunswick, but we do not yet have all the information with respect to the applicable process in these provinces. When this information will be made available to us, we will include more information regarding applicable process in these two provinces on this web page.
Residents of Nova Scotia need to apply directly through the Home Energy Assessment program to register and book their EnerGuide evaluation. For residents who believe they qualify for retroactive reimbursement, please note that your respective provincial entity will work directly with NRCan to identify eligible participants.
Residents of New Brunswick are encouraged to apply first through their provincial program and then through the Canada Green Homes Grant. The eligibility criteria for the two programs are very different. In other words, a renovation that qualifies for the provincial program is not necessarily eligible for the Greener Homes initiative, and vice versa. The best source of information is the Greener Homes Initiative website, which is more comprehensive and has all the program details.
Step 3: Plan, document and take on your home retrofits
After receiving your EnerGuide evaluation from your energy advisor, you can review the content and decide which retrofits work best for your budget and the renovation plans.
You will need to complete at least one retrofit that is both eligible and recommended by your energy advisor to qualify for the grant program.

Step 4: Book your post-retrofit evaluation and apply for your reimbursement
Once your home retrofits are completed, you can start the reimbursement process.
To qualify, you need to book your post-retrofit evaluation and submit the required documents online or by mail. The post-retrofit evaluation shows how much energy has been saved because of the work that was done, and how much your energy advisor recommends you receive for reimbursement.
To ensure that you are properly reimbursed, you must have all receipts from your pre-and post-renovation EnerGuide evaluation, as well as all receipts and invoices for products purchased and for installation costs. You need to keep copies of your documents until March 31, 2028. Furthermore, please note that federal grants, including any reimbursements received as part of this initiative, are not taxable and do not need to be reported as income.

Step 5: Receive your reimbursement
You will receive an email from the government asking you to confirm your grant total. Once you confirm your grant total online - you will receive your payment in the mail, as a cheque from the government.
As the final step in the process - once the program officers have completed a review of your file and recommended the grant amount - you will be prompted to go into the portal of the government to confirm your grant total to receive your reimbursement.
