Rated 5 out of 5 by from Charcoal is nothing to be afraid of. I bought the keg to replace an old Broil King Porta-chef that I had been using as my main grill for about ten years. I was a bit uneasy about switching to charcoal as I had been using propane exclusively since I've owned a barbecue. My first test was to season the grill as instructed - just to see how it heated up and if the temperature was east to control. The charcoal took a while to get hot enough, but the damper control doesn't really take a lot of fiddling to get accustomed to. On a friend's recommendation, I bought a charcoal chimney. That made a big difference in the heat up time. It's almost as fast a standard gas grill to get to grilling (like steaks and burgers) heat now. It grills just fine and there's decent room on the grilling surface itself. I mention the grilling because my understanding is these types of barbecues are designed for low, slow rib and brisket duty. It grills like a champ and gets to temperature no problem. All that said, it's the charcoal flavour that most impresses me. With the dampers keeping the heat where you want it and the lid closed tightly, you tend to get a nice smoker effect as a result. Even something that cooks quickly, like hamburgers, gets a nice flavour from the charcoal. Like wow nice! Gas doesn't compare for taste. What a difference! As for the keg's design, The thick insulated walls hold the heat in and the damper control can be turned down quite a ways and you still have enough heat to grill easily. This results in this barbecue being very efficient with the charcoal. I't's surprising how much is left after cooking a meal. I'm still not familiar enough to figure out how much is needed, so I just load it up. The next time I use it, I pull the grill up and reload the chimney with the leftovers and top it up with some fresh charcoal. Yes it's pricey, but so far it looks like I'm spending less on charcoal than I was on propane, and the taste with charcoal is just amazing. As for value for the dollar, similarly styled grills are usually more expensive and mostly smaller. If you're looking for a "Komado" style grill, this is the best deal for price vs. size. Yes you'll pay less for an uninsulated charcoal grill of similar size, but I believe this to be a lot more versatile and efficient. Not to mention is looks pretty cool too. I will be making more than steaks, brats and burgers soon. I have the diffuser now, so I will be experimenting with the low and slow heat this thing was made for. A roast chicken is next and ribs will be soon too. I really like it. :)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from love this grill. I can keep temperatures better, which means better cooked food then other BBQs . Only problem if I wanted to add more wood chunks or wood chips in the middle of the cooking process I can't. No door to the firebowl.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Awesome BBQ My son bought a Keg and invited us over for Thanksgiving turkey that he cooked on the Keg. It was the best turkey we have ever had, tender and juicy. A few weeks later he cooked us pizza on the stone and once again by far the best pizza too. I decided at that point to switch from a gas BBQ to the Keg. I was originally worried about the "back to charcoal set up" . It does take a little bit longer to start up (compared to gas) but the small amount of start up time is well worth the quality and taste if the food coming off the grill. The only reason I did not give it 5 stars was because of the lack of side shelves so you do need a small table beside the Keg for prep. I am extremely pleased with this BBQ and my gas days are done!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Charcoal is king! I convinced my wife that a Broil King 2000 would make a great Christmas gift. I've used it almost every weekend since and would never go back to propane. Obviously takes a bit longer to get going than pushing an igniter button but the temperature control is awesome and you can't beat the smoky charcoal flavour! Highly recommended!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Love cooking on this unit! Bought from a local dealer based on recommendation. Used a few different Kamodo grills in the past and did not want ceramic again. The Keg filled the bill perfectly. Total heat control, very efficient fuel usage (lump charcoal/wood/charcoal). Flavor...fun, good looking....what's not to like? I have a question about what comes with the grill...that part if mystifying. I've seen reference to racks for veggies etc and the mysterious grill tool that doubles as a vent tool. Are they options that are available?

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great Grill, but starting to disintegrate Grill has worked great, however the three brackets holding the grill plate in place have started to disintigrate. Screws have rusted / fallen out due to heat and bracket no longer holds the weight of the grill plate. The brackets are part of the body of the grill - not sold separately.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Almost perfect My wedding party bought my wife and I the broil king keg. Has been a great experience and really got me into charcoaling almost everything. We even make dessert on this badboy. I thing however I believe is a design flaw is the bottom air intake...especially the rivets...they wear fast and needed replacement. Currently my grill is out of comission as the bottom is broken again and rivet holes worn badly. I use a cover after each use....really disapointing. Id recomend but id mention this issue.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Effective but... I bought a BK Keg in 2012. It keeps temps very well over extended cooks and uses very little charcoal. The only issue is that both the bottom (2 years ago) and top (current) portions of the keg itself have rusted out. How this is even possible is beyond me because I kept it covered. Bottom was replaced through Warranty and I expect that the top will be replaced as well. Again, a very good bbq but with hindsight I should have purchased one of the ceramic komados instead.

I've smoked brisket, pork legs, chickens, have grilled burgers, chicken wings, shrimp, etc. But what surprised me was that our families favorite use for the Keg is to get it up to 650F and use it as a pizza oven. It holds heat really well. My only complaint would be that the I rarely use the top stainless steel rack because it seems to get in the way. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

La quantité de charbon utilisé est minime comparé au autres grils de charbons de bois. Gros problème par exemple, il ne faut le laisser à la pluie car elle s'infiltre par la trappe d'air du bas et fait rouiller la cuve interne et externe. Sur le mien , j'ai peur qu'il perce...... dommage.

I use little pieces of Denso tape to cover the nuts and bolts to avoid any corrosion. Vacuum out the ash trap after every couple uses. Keep the vents lubed with lard regularly. After MONTHS of back and forth, I never got enough parts to even reinstall the handles, and the replacement is so poor, slow and low is no longer an option. Avoid made in China, and avoid Broil King.

Le seul hic est au niveau de la recharge de combustible lors des cuissons très longue. Il faut enlever la grille afin de l'approvisionner en charbon. Je l'utilise été comme hiver !

Last time I took the cover off, however, we discovered that 2 of the rivets had rusted out of the lower damper leaving it hanging. Not sure how we will fix this.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better than ceramic, despite flaws Have used this for about a year. This steel Kamado grill heats up faster and with less coal than a ceramic grill would. It takes mine 3-4 minutes to reach 350’F with about 4 lbs of hardwood charcoal from the chimney. It also takes less time to cool down if you overshoot the temperature. It is much lighter and won’t shatter to pieces. It’s less hot to touch than a ceramic exterior. The cooking results like colour, taste & juiciness are exactly the same as with a ceramic. Mine has an excellent build quality with no air leaks and not even signs of rust even after a year in a relatively humid and warm European climate. If you smoke at low temp, the expensive ceramic alternatives exhibit better thermal inertia. For getting to warmer temperatures, the steel is a far superior material. Downsides: Upper vent lets in rain when open. Patience and attention is necessary when screwing the top lid in order to prevent air leaks. Thermometer reads air temperature inside the top lid, so a temperature probe on the grate is necessary. All in all this is probably the best steel Kamado on the market and far superior to the heavy and slow ceramic Kamados.
