Working with Concrete
To pour a slab, repair a crack or joint, erect a wall, etc, concrete is the material of choice. The question in each case is "What concrete mixture is the right one for the task?"
To help you to choose the mixture that will let you carry out your particular project, we present the following concrete formulas.
Concrete mix
Recommended for jobs 2" thick or more. Used for construction work or repairs (e.g. sidewalks, floors, patio bases or fence post bases).
Cement and sand mix
Recommended for jobs 2" thick or less. Used to seal cracks in cement and between stone slabs. It is also used for parging (facing coat).
Cement and aggregate mix to which you add water to create fast set concrete. Used for construction work that requires a fast set (e.g. sidewalks, patio bases and stairs).
Fast set concrete mix for fence post bases, similar to "Fast Set".
White mortar mix
Sand and masonry cement mix to which you add water. Used to lay bricks, blocks and fieldstones or to erect walls. Can also be used to make joints between bricks or to repair them.
Adheres 8 to 10 times better than standard cement mixes. Perfect for quick repairs of damaged or crumbling concrete surfaces. Used for levelling uneven mortar surfaces, repairing masonry joints, installing natural stones and patio slabs.
Standard Portland
High quality hydraulic adhesive cement. Perfect for most concrete jobs. Resistance to concrete compression varies depending on the amounts of cement and water used.
Masonry cement
Cement made from a Portland cement and lime mix. Used for parging (facing coat) jobs, brick and block joints. One bag is sufficient to lay 200 bricks or 50 to 75 blocks.
So, the above recommendations should solidify your projects... and your resolve to get them done!
