Whether you wish to give an armchair an informal look or decorate a modest dining room chair, throws - which deserve consideration - are decorative items that can be original, affordable and practical. But you need to know how to use them!
A piece of cloth, a shawl or table cloth one simply throws on furniture - sofa, chair, armchair or bed - to decorate it. You need only get a large shawl to breathe new life into your furniture and change your decor in no time. Tied to or carefully dropped onto an old piece of furniture, a throw has the power to change "old and worn" into interesting and worth a second look.
Throws and slipcovers are not to be confused. Slipcovers are made to fit around furniture and adopt its shape very closely. A good one will fit like a glove. Throws, on the other hand, are simply dropped on furniture, more or less like blankets. Depending on the fabric of which they are made and their size, they can be tapered with knotted cords.

The use of table throws and heavy tapestry tablecloths goes back to the Renaissance. At the time, those items were an integral part of any decor. Today, originality is in style. Throws fit in beautifully, combining attractiveness, practicality and affordability to rejuvenate furniture. At the same time, they give furniture the kind of bold look that simply attracts notice.
Knowing how to use throws
If you are thinking of making your own throws, be sure to consult the patterns you will find in sewing catalogues and books. They are sure to inspire you. By way of example, a quilted bedspread can easily be used as a throw over a sofa or your favourite old armchair. Be sure the corners just touch the floor at the front. Gather the excess fabric at the back of the furniture and hold it together in two large rosettes, using elastic bands.
The choice of fabrics

Be careful in choosing fabrics. In addition to being attractive, a fabric should wear well. To the extent it is possible, use washable fabrics. When the time comes to make the throw, try co-ordinate it with other elements of your decor. And do not get carried away with ruffles and gathers. After all, throws are not formal gowns! Simplicity being "de rigueur", decorate them with tape and use cords and tassels to tie them back.
If you have ever wondered what to do with that old travelling trunk that has been in the family forever, why not cover it with a throw, place a bouquet of wild flowers on it and hang a nice frame on the wall behind it. The possibilities are endless.
