Smart from every angle

This built-in shelving unit immediately catches the eye. Not only does it offer additional display and storage space but it also provides a harmonious transition between two rooms in this open-plan house and gives character to the decor. We built the shelves using 2” × 4” wood planks which we covered with plasterboard and painted a pale colour to contrast with the blue wall and to create a focal point. We could just as easily have made less of a statement by painting it the same colour as the walls. Note the recessed light in the top shelf, which draws the eye and brings a touch of class. Simple to build. a unit like this is a great way to make use of small or awkward corners.

Practical spaces

We made full use of the space in this living room alcove by building in these attractive and practical shelves, made from MDF and painted the same greige hue as the surrounding walls. To give the shelves their chunky look we built them as you would a box, with pieces of MDF around each edge to form the “sides”. This also makes it easier to attach the shelves firmly to the wall. Attractive, handy, and so simple to make, this is the perfect spot to display books, baskets, plants, and all your favourite knick-knacks!
