Shedding light on kitchens

The kitchen is the heart of the house, a place where we spend a lot of time preparing meals and where the family gathers. For this reason, kitchens must be functional: they must work for us and meet our specific needs. A great deal of thought should go into the overall planning and design of a kitchen. Proper lighting for the day and evening is essential, both for making the kitchen easier to work in and for highlighting the special features of the room. Here are some bright ideas to help you see more clearly in this all-important room.

A working balance

Uncluttered lines and attractive materials make for a comfortable, easy-to-live-in kitchen which has been designed to take full advantage of natural light. To mark the transition between the dining room and the kitchen, a basic shelf unit, with wood shelves and metal uprights forms a visual separation and is, at the same time, a useful place to store dishes close to the dining area. For good task lighting, we chose to balance the fittings: three pendant lights hang above the island counter, complementing the three wall lights over the stove. In this way, the lighting can be adjusted in different parts of the room as needed. Note how the atmosphere of the kitchen is reflected in the choice of simple, modern light fittings.

A touch of frivolity

For a fun touch in this kitchen with its clean lines and a predominance of stainless steel, wood and granite, we’ve chosen some rather whimsical fittings for the pendant lights that hang asymmetrically above the centre island, their cute, brightly coloured shades bringing a splash of colour into the room and energizing the decor. An additional wall spot installed between the two wall cabinets gives extra light for working in the sink area. An ingenious, efficient solution if you don’t have daylight from a window!
