This very simple technique allows for endless theme variations. In fact, there are as many possibilities as there are patterned papers. The important thing is to choose a good quality paper.
If you do not have the necessary tools to make the valence, have the lumber to size by your home centre. Install them with the metal brackets.
Here is a plan you can adapt to the width of your window.
1.1
NB: The front panel covers the other 3 pieces that give the valance its thickness.
2. Cover all surfaces
Once you have assembled the valance, cover all surfaces with Primer Sealer/ Duo Latex Base Coat using a small napped roller. Let dry 4 hours.
3. Crumple the map
Gently crumple the world map with your hands so as to form small creases.
Unfold the map and smooth out with your fingers.
4. Apply the glue
Apply white glue with the paintbrush on all the surfaces which will be covered with the map (front and 2 sides).
4.1
Stretch the map over the glue, without actually laying on the glue, in order to centre that part of the map you want to especially feature. It is important to glue the map starting at one end, rubbing it over the glue with the hand as you move towards the other end. The objective of this step is to ensure proper adherence and avoid large creases. Once the façade is complete, use the hand in the same fashion to glue the side panels. Let dry at least one hour.
4.2
Using the knife, cut the excess paper (map) following the contours of the surfaces you have just covered. Check to see that the map is well glued to all surfaces.
5. Apply the crackling
Apply a generous coat of Nostalgia Crackling over the surfaces of the map using a short-bristled roller. Let dry until tack-free.
6. Apply the varnish over the map
Using a short-bristled roller, apply a coat of Brïo Varnish over the surfaces covered by the map. The varnish produces the crackling effect which, at this juncture is hardly visible. Let dry for at least 12 hours.
7. Produce the antique effect
Use the rag to spread Chocolate Mousse (C224-32), in patches of 15 cm x 15 cm. The second rag, which will have been dampened but well wrung, is then used to remove the excess paint and produce the desired antique effect. Rubbing movements must be very gentle to avoid damaging the surface treated with crackling.
To achieve the antique effect, over the surface, apply Chocolate Mousse (C224-32) in the cracks of the crackling, making sure small parts of the surface are left without paint. That is why the crackling effect is produced with varnish. This way, the world map remains visible but is slightly "veiled" by premature ageing.
8. Paint the remaining white surfaces
Use Everlasting (DB118-20) to paint the surfaces that have remained white, applying 2 coats with a paintbrush or roller. Let dry 4 hours after each coat.
9. Apply the varnish
After 7 days, apply a coat of Brïo Varnish using a small short-bristled roller.
10. Affix the valance
Affix the valance around the window using metal brackets.
Now it’s up to you to add the personal touch using curtains, drapes, cords or other items; show off your artistic sense.
