List of materials

  • Curtain material (taupe coloured in the photo)
  • Finger jointed pine rods, 1 inch
  • Velcro
  • Sewing thread
  • Cord matching the fabric
  • 3 screw-in eyelets (7/8 inch) for the top
  • 12 screw-in eyelets (5/8 inch) for the rods
  • One decorative object to finish the lengths of cord (decorative tassel, glass bead finishing, bell, etc.)
  • Paint (same colour as the window frame)
  • Squares and screws

Note: the blind is to be installed within the window frame.

Steps to follow

  1. Cut the material according to the window measurements. For the required length: add the length of the window to the surplus needed to make the hems; 2 ½" on top and 3" for the bottom and a further 2 ½" for each rod pocket. For the required width: measure the inside of the window and add 3" for the seams on each side (1 ½" per side).

  2. Cut 3 lengths of cord: one length equalling two times the length of the blind, one equalling two times the length of the blind plus one half the width, and one equalling two times the length of the blind plus the width.

  3. Cut the pine rods to fit the width of the window minus ¼" to facilitate movement.

  4. Paint the bar (rod) that will be attached to the top of the window in the same colour as the window frame. Wait for the paint to dry then attach the sticky backed piece of Velcro. Staple for enhanced strength.

  5. Make the side seams for the blind by folding the fabric first ½" then 1". Iron, then stitch using the sewing machine.

  6. Make the hem for the top of the curtain by folding the fabric first ½", then 2". Iron then machine stitch.

  7. Apply the “hook” side of the Velcro on the inside of the fabric, on top.

  8. Make the bottom hem by folding the fabric first ½", then 1 ¼". Iron then machine stitch. The bottom rod will slide into the hem.

  9. Determine the positioning of the rod pockets by dividing the length of the blind in equal parts. Trace a line for each pocket.

  10. Overstitch the pockets by taking 1 ¼" on either side of your lines.

  11. Fold the pockets again towards the bottom and iron.

  12. Insert rods in all pockets, including the bottom hem.

  13. Attach the sticky backed piece of Velcro to the rod that will be fastened to the window to the Velcro on the top of the blind.

  14. Under the top rod, make one mark in the middle and one on each side, indented by 3 inches and screw in the 7/8 inch eyelets.

  15. On the other rods, make a mark in the middle and at 3 inches from either end and screw in the 5/8 inch eyelets through the fabric.

  16. Attach the longest length of cord to the bottom left eyelet. Thread the cord through the eyelets found above. Thread the cord through all the eyelets on top moving towards the right. Repeat for each cord (from the bottom), finishing with the shortest.

  17. Gather the three lengths of cord remaining on the right side of the blind and thread the decorative object through them, then make a knot.

  18. Install the whole blind within the window frame using small squares.

A few hours are all you need to create this beautiful Roman blind that you can also personalize through your choice of fabric. To let in more sunlight, choose curtain fabric that is less opaque, in a bright colour. Instead of painting the wooden rod on top of the blind, you could also cover it with fabric.
