The frame of the 30" x 40" mirror is made of rope moulding glued onto a pediment. We spray-painted all the moulding before cutting it. The finished mirror measures 38" x 48".

List of tools

  • Table saw or circular saw with cutting guide
  • Mitre saw
  • Measuring tape
  • Pencil
  • Square

List of materials

  • 1 sheet MDF, 1/2" x 48" x 96"
  • 2 lengths pediment moulding, 4" x 96"
  • 2 lengths decorative rope moulding, 1" x 96"
  • 1 bevelled mirror, 30" x 40"
  • Wood glue
  • Silicone
  • Primer
  • Gold spray paint

Step-by-step

  1. Cut a panel of 38" x 48" from the MDF and seal it with a coat of primer on both sides. Leave to dry.

  2. Apply a coat of gold spray paint to both sides of the panel.

  3. Centre the mirror on the MDF panel and draw around its edges. Remove the mirror.

  4. Apply numerous dabs of silicone across the back of the mirror, then stick the mirror onto the MDF panel, lining it up with the pencil marks.
  1. Using wood glue, affix the rope moulding to the pediment moulding along the flat channel between the two bulges. Leave the glue to dry.

  2. Next, paint the moulding with the gold spray paint and leave to dry.

  3. From each length of moulding, cut one piece 38" long and another 48" long.

  4. Bevel the ends of each piece at a 45° angle.

  5. Position the mouldings around the mirror and adjust the corners.
  1. Glue the moulding onto the MDF panel with wood glue.

  2. Any paint touch-ups can be made with a cotton swab or small brush dipped into a little paint sprayed onto a piece of card.

Fasten the mirror to the wall using suitable picture hooks. Since the mirror is heavy, the screws should be attached to the wall studs.
