Lighting up the holiday season!
A mild winter’s evening with snow flakes gently filling the air... through the glow of a thousand lights creating a magical scene… Homes are warm and welcoming adorned with their season’s finery, and all the wonder of this magical time is yours to behold as the holiday season comes alive once again!
To decorate your outdoors, take advantage of all your home and property has to offer: trees, corner of the yard, balcony, posts and lamp posts, windows, doors – and don’t forget the roof! Whether simple or extravagant, the important thing is to create a wonderfully sparkling decor.
The trees first and foremost! Bring them to light, whether they’re fir trees or other coniferous trees or shrubs. You’ll find a wide selection of all sorts of lights to choose from: mini-lights and ordinary lights (7 watts) with or without animation. This year, why not try outdoor net light sets. They’re easy to install and have excellent bulb distribution. Light sets come in single colours – clear, blue, green or red – or multi-coloured sets. Lights on green wires are better for use in trees, since the wires will be less visible.
Your own personal taste, and your budget, will be your guide when it comes to quantity. The more lights you put up, the greater the effect. An extension pole will make installing lights in high and hard to reach places much, much easier.
If the size of your trees puts them out of reach, or if you don’t have any trees at all, you could try this: buy a natural fir tree, cut about 5 cm off the base at a slant, put the tree in a specially designed outdoor tree holder and place it in the snow. It will keep perfectly until the spring – without dropping its needles.
For a touch of romance, wrap a length of light, filmy material like organza or satin around your tree as you would tinsel. This is a very simple technique, but the effect is truly eye-catching and your tree will appear lavishly decorated. Take care to attach the material carefully to the tree; you wouldn’t want it to be carried off in the wind! You can also decorate the branches of trees that have lost their leaves. Lights on bare branches can be very beautiful, like a cloud of lights floating in the sky.
You can create another effect by tying ribbons to the branches, using one single colour or any combination you want. The effort and time you put into it will be completely worth it, and an original and festive decor will be your reward! Direct a spotlight on the tree to maximize the effect when the sun goes down.
Enchanting scenery!
A winter, Christmas, or Nativity scene will always add a touch of magic to your winter wonderland. Look for the most perfect spot and install figures for the Nativity scene, and maybe Santa Claus and a snowman as well. They come in both metal and plastic, but you should be consistent and choose only one. Take a look at the inflatable decorations that are so popular with the little ones and that add an entertaining touch to your decorations outside. Gather your figures ‘round trees and bushes already festooned with lights for a truly enchanting appeal. Avoid mixing up the characters, however; Santa Claus and his reindeer don’t belong beside the shepherds in the Nativity scene!
Create a path of light by setting lanterns on either side of the walk leading from the yard to your front door. Fill several glass jars to the quarter mark with non-flammable objects, like small pebbles or candies. Then in each jar, put a small candle to be lit on Holiday evenings, to guide your guests up to the door. You’ll need several jars to really create an effect – and an original and warm way to welcome your visitors.
