Insulating a wall
Presented by: Cascades
Sound proofing certain rooms in the house can prove to be indispensable. Be it to insulate a home cinema room, an office or the kid's playroom, installing acoustic insulation is child's play thanks to easy-to-install acoustic panels.
Sound deadening panels made from post industrial recycled woodchips used for residential and commercial applications are suitable for renovation projects or new construction. Measuring generally 4' X 8', these panels are available in a standard version as well as a fire retardant version for much more security. They are easy to cut and can be nailed or screwed onto wood or steel studs.
For optimized sound insulation, the wall system must behave like a sound box, i.e. with the absorbing materials within the assembly and the rigid panels (gypsum, plywood, etc.) tightly closing this assembly.
If it's a new construction, you are ready to start the installation. If it's a renovation project, strip down the assembly to the stud, removing the gypsum panels or plaster, etc.)
1. Insulate the wall
Blow cellulose insulation between studs as per manufacturer instructions or insert acoustical batts (3 1/2 in. in sufficient.)
2. Fasten the acoustical panel
Fasten the acoustical panel with the holes on the stud side. Use wallboard nails or 1 1/2 in. gypsum panel screws spaced 16 in. on center.
3. Seal the perimeter
Apply a bead of acoustical sealant on the edge of the acoustical panel and also the wall perimeter.
4. Attach resilient channels
Attach resilient channels at right angles to the studs (spaced 16 in. on center.
5. Screw the gypsum panel
Screw 5/8 in. Type X gypsum panels on the resilient channels. Stagger the panels to prevent sound leaks. All that remains is to apply plaster to the joints and paint.
And now you have a room for noisy activities or, on the other hand, a room to shield you from the noise in the rest of the house!
