Installing a sectional garage door

Installing a garage door be a complex task that requires a certain know-how. We highly recommend that novice do-it-yourselfers hire a garage door installer. If you choose to do it yourself, be sure to have all the tools required on hand and get someone to help you at certain stages, especially when handling door sections, tracks and springs.

Before getting started, make sure that the dimensions of the opening correspond to those of the door and that there is adequate clearance space above and behind the door to allow for its proper operation.

1. Align and center the hinges

On the ground, tightly align the sections face up over two boards. Trace a line to align and center the hinges. Mark and screw in the bottom corner supports as well as the bottom of the hinges.

1.1

Center the bottom section in the opening. This allows you to pinpoint where to screw in the vertical rail on the inside jamb. Before installing the rails, make sure that the top is level. Screw the right rail in 1/2 in. (13 mm) from the floor, leaving 1/2 in. (13 mm) of space between the rail and the end of the section. Insert the guide wheels into the hinge and the right support for the bottom section.

2. Install the vertical rails

Lift the section, place the guide wheels into the rail and place the section on the ground, in its exact future location. Use a carpenter's level to make sure it is level and plumb. Insert the guide wheel into the top right hinge for the second section. Insert the guide wheel into the right rail and place the second section over the first. Screw in the hinges. Repeat this operation for the other sections.

2.1

Insert the guide wheels in the supports and hinges on the left. Attach the left vertical rail to the guide wheels and the left jamb, leaving a space of 1/2 in. (13 mm) between the rail and the door. The rails must be perfectly parallel. Make sure the two vertical rails are level by measuring the distance between the top of the door and the top of the rail.
