Installing recessed lighting

Recessed light fixtures — or pot lights — are easy to install, blend well with the surrounding decor and are multifunctional. Tucked away unnoticed under the kitchen cabinets, they light up the work surfaces very effectively. In the basement, they save valuable headroom space. Models that can be tilted are ideal for showing off paintings or highlighting architectural details. When connected to a dimmer switch, these lights also allow you to create different atmospheres in a room to suit the occasion, or your mood!

1. Existing lighting

If a ceiling light is already hanging from a finished ceiling, you can take it down and use the existing wires and wall switch for the recessed fixtures. However, this assumes that the hole is in the exact spot you would like to install your new pot light.

2. Install a new wall switch

Run a new wall switch and wire to the proposed recessed fixtures. Run that wall-switch wire back to the electrical-service panel.

3. Hang the pot-light fixtures

Typically, a minimum of 2 ft away from the wall and 4 to 6 ft apart is recommended, depending on ceiling height.

4. Install wires

Run wire to the switch from the main panel and from the switch to the pot lights 1 at a time, in sequence. Follow manufacturer's instructions as to how to wire each individual pot light properly.
As you can see, it’s not that complicated and look at the results!
